Winter Solstice, it's purely a natural feeling due to many thousands of years of experiencing the change of seasons. Read about the Winter Solstice and it may clear that up a little bit.
Either that, or it's Mr. Macy's!

Actually, the Christmas thing is an extension of the Roman Saturnalia.
Jesus was probably born on some other day, in reality; and it's even possible that He wasn't even born in that month.
Saint Nickolas being made Sant Clause has it's roots in the Chariot of Thor!
However, it's actually more of a Social Event than a Religious one.
So, who cares?
Merry Christmas!!!!

It's the feeling of nature, the sun coming back, the turning of the year. It's the time of deepest darkness turning into the beginning of the return of the light, a fit time to celebrate the birth of Jesus although he was probably born in the Spring, when the sheep are giving birth and the shepherds are watching in the fields at night.
