If they read it it's just to look for "error" in it. They're blinded to it's 100% truth. It's sad, actually!

The bible has also helped convince me that it is simply mythology. Religions of today are mythologies of tomorrow. It is that simple.

We atheists read the Bible to be educated. Lets be honest, about 2 billion people, (that's about 1/3) of the earth's population calls themselves christian. It is a good idea to be educated on what these people believe. I not only read the Bible, but the Koran and other religious scriptures.

Especially those growing up in the Western world, atheist or not- reading the bible is imperative if one is to understand Western culture. Just as much as learning about Greek mythology. The only difference is we atheists consider Greek and pagan mythologies and the Christian biblical mythologies to be about the same as far as accuracy. History blended with legend, that is how all religions started.

No books are written by God, so why read any? The bible is of historic and social scientific interest because it represents the folk tales of a historically obscure quasi nomadic Semitic tribe and the philosophy of a cult that became Christianity and has had a major influence on the development of western civilization.

Plus there is a lot of good action and comedy. Like when the King’s son rapes Jacobs daughter and decides he loves her and wants to marry her.

Jacob’s sons knew that they couldn’t really fight all the Kings men, so they told the King’s son that the Kings men could have all the women, but first they had to be circumcised.

So, like idiots, all the Kings men go ahead and get circumcised – and then on the third day – when they were really sore – Jacobs sons attacked and killed them all and stole all of their stuff.

Now, that’s funny. I do not care who wrote it.

You, I'm sure wont understand this; but I was very religious up until I got out of the Army, went to college, and was required to read the Bible.
I was an honor student, so my comprehension should not be questioned any more than your own.
Before I could even finish the first page I could no longer believe in that book, and I began to pity the people who were taken in by it.
It was some time later that I realized that a person could reach a higher plane of morality than being coerced to do the right thing because of fear of punishment or desire for reward.
Now I'm proud to say that I'm a moral ADULT.

That is a problem from your standpoint. I quote a lot of scripture and I believe it. There are parts of the bible that are not totally understood but that does not cause me to disbelieve. Take John the guy who wrote the book of Revelation. He described war machines 2000 years ago so he did not know what he saw, but he was faithful in writing about it. Now don't you agree that takes faith to do such a thing. There are many more remarkable things to know that others will not know or even ponder and therefore will miss many blessings in this life because they want to cling onto their sins.

in the start, all this threating about all non-believers going to hell is by no ability a thanks to get human beings to come back decrease back to Christianity - why would someone favor to associate themselves with that sort of hate? to respond to your question although - not all athiests study the bible, yet for human beings that do, i'd imagine that's to communicate about the topics interior the bible. as an get at the same time - Noah's Ark. you extremely choose me to trust that one guy outfitted a huge boat, rounded up one male and lady of each species, fed them daily for months at a time, wiped clean up the inevitable body purposes, stopped them from eating one yet another, and then dropped all of them off at the same time as it replaced into all performed? That might want to were one busy guy! And as for the professor of theology decrease than speaking about "Subjectively" studying the bible. i imagine they have missed the point of what "Subjective" ability - it signifies that 2 human beings can study the same element, and may arise with 2 thoroughly diverse interpretations. the actual incontrovertible truth that an athiest thinks in yet in a unique way is precisely the point! in case you want to coach there's a God, furnish purpose data, not Subjective data, that is a procedures a lot less open to interpretation!

Didn't know that was against the law, interesting...

Oh, and a lot of atheists USE TO BE believers, so they may very well have read it.

Edit: If you notice, I never quote it. I was never a believer either and don't care to waste my time reading that stuff. Though I do enjoy hearing about the absurd parts that people mention.

To try to understand what it is that makes believers believe the things they believe. For example, why do they believe that everyone in the world is going to go to Hell except them? Millions of non-Christians, no matter how moral and good they might be, are all going to suffer for eternity in Hell? It makes no sense to me at all that any just, loving God would allow tens of millions of human beings to suffer in Hell for eternity just because they are not Christians, so I read the Bible to try to understand why anyone would believe this.

the ideas of the bible are better without the tainted politics of deity and threats of god awful damnation but some of us just don't progress beyond the confusion of barbarian times . So don't throw the baby out with the bath water the morals and truisms of early scholars often prevail and have value beyond the hokum pokum superstition that first carried them. I just cut the fat before I eat my spiritual food , I think it's more spiritually healthful.
just my opinion so peace out

The bible helped convince me there was no god. Consequently, I have not read other holy books. But I am familiar with the bible - plus, I went to Catholic school.

To argue better. If I never used a quote, you'd tell me I didn't have a leg to stand on. Plus I have to fact check my opposition.
