Autumn starts around September 23 and ends around December 21, same dates as the rest of the Northern hemisphere. I've found that NYC doesn't have much of a autumn like you might find in New England. It's more like summer slips into winter. One day it's hot and the leaves are green then suddenly you notice they're half brown, falling off and it's windy. There seems to be a very short period in late October into November that seems the most like autumn. Decent foliage viewing isn't a big thing here.

We also seem to lack a typical spring. Winter seems to hangs around until there's a hot day then suddenly it's summer.

Autumn compels her arboreal denizens in NY to unfurl their various and sundry apparel from mid to late September to early to mid November.
