Both before and after.
1. During your workout, your muscles tear and needs immediate amino acids to start repairing. This make sure your muscles get the maximum growth.
2. If you have a lean body mass, your muscles can burnout if you have not enough fats to burn. Fat burning are placed in this order.
1. Cells synthesis
2. Bodily heat Insulation
3. Intra-organs/cells lubrication
and finally
4. energy.
Therefore although fats are burned to produce energy, it has a limit. There must be enough fats to fulfill the first three before fulfilling the last. Thats why the body burns EXCESS fat for energy.
3. Thus, if you don't have enough excess body fats, your body starts to tear down the untouched muscles in your body to compromise for the tore muscle. Thus your workout for a "hulk" sized body is dragged longer and your overall strength is reduced.
Therefore you MUST drink a protein shake before your workout.
Why you drink after your workout?
Well, this question is pretty obvious but these are some guidelines for drinking after workout.
1. Drink extra protein(WHY?)
During repairs, your body will burn energy(again) to do the following jobs:
1. Breaking down of the proteins into amino acids
2. Absorbing them through the small intestines
3. Transport them to the destinated muscles and organs
(cus when you train, not only your muscles grow, your organs grow too! They are namely your heart, lungs, liver and kidneys)
4. For the process of repairing muscles
5. As the building blocks to repair your muscles.
2. Drink whey/synthetic protein if you meant shakes...
1. They are almost 100% absorbed.
2. They are more expensive(I mean normally other shakes are $20 cheaper but less effective, might as well pay more for more effective protein. Thinking of the gym membership, $20 is actually nothing...)
3. Synthetic protein are made SPECIALLY for muscles, they aren't steroids, so praise God for creating people who invented them!!!

You can drink a 1/5(fraction) deluted protein and water shake pior workout. You can drink a think 1/8 deluted protein shake with electrolytes during workout. Afterward, drink a 35 to 45 gram protein shake.

after......you have a 30 minute Protein window. take only 30-40 grams cause that's all your body will digest, the rest is in the toilet. many people don't know this.
Don't get HUGE either, just get lean and mean. Too many big guys later in life are fat slobs, so don't be pressured into feeling you need to be a gorilla. Also I like Liquid Amino Acids, very good for you. I take half the recommended dose, usually 2 tablespoons 2 times a day. Check into it, ask your doctor if its cool.

I think you should drink half of one before and half of one after the workout.
I also drink half of one befor bed to give me a good start the next day.

Why not just drink a glass of milk or soy milk that is healthy too..Is has no chemicals...Protein shakes..have fat...low fat milk or soy is better
