I have to applaud you for this question and for your views on the subject.
The scriptures have been quite helpful to the overall advancement mankind and I'm happy they have been preserved. However, the difficulty which arises out of scripture in today's complex world is something of a different nature and it is a current source of potential armed conflict between nations and cultures.
Religions are to apt to stress that "truth" can be had only through a single way of believing and it is this tendency to tout the differences of religion through conflicting scripture which spawn the potential dangers to society - scripture is easily used as a tool that causes sides to be taken and then they additionally fuel the flames of illogical ideological conflict.
While the differences in scriptures of opposing religions are relatively minute in terms of moral instruction, the rift between opposing religious followers who are set apart buy ritual and various shows of faith and by irrational support for the name of a respective God, can become obstacles as great as virtually impassable gulfs.
The biggest deal about scripture is, of course, that sometimes it is taken so literally and followed so earnestly by radicals and fanatics who might, in fact, misrepresent the actual text of a particular verse for its political gain or for its inflammatory value or for its call to act in God's name, that in these cases the scripture itself becomes as guilty and as dangerous as the radical who touts it or acts upon it.
Scriptures, of themselves, are no problem at all... it is in the believers and in the followers of the scriptures where the cancerous problem grows. Without followers, where would there be any harm in having and revering these fascinating documents of the past.
Let the words of God become history. See them as lessons learned and as bridges crossed; and then, without them move forward to reason your way toward the ultimate truth of our universe - live in the future of our brotherhood with yet newer and newer discoveries and additions onto our collective intellect and give support for all of mankind through your faith in human logic alone.

What is the big deal about the Scripture or the Bible?
Well the Bible was written by over forty writers, who all claim to be inspired by the Holy Spirit or by God Himself. Those writers lived during the life span of 1600 years, living in different places, most of them never met each other, and having different occupations. Yet they all speak of the same thing and do not contradict each other. It is the most attacked book throughout the ages, but the attackers have all died or are dying and yet the book grows stronger, speaks louder, and translated into more languages, and hold the biggest numbers of sales until now.
It contains most amazing prophecies, scientifical facts, and historical narrations that cannot be denied, and power to change lives like no other book can.
It promises something that have been the comfort and hope of millions of people who would rather die than deny it.
That is the big deal about the Bible or the Scripture.

Truth is the main focus of the scriptures.
To learn, and hopefully grow, into decent adults.
The 'only' sad part about the bible is, there has been so much that was left out of it.
There are actually 'proof positive' at least 30 more gospels written by other early christians (followers of Christ).
These ancient documents are in Jerusalem, and some in rome.
But the most important thing is, we 'do our best' to obey the
teachings we do have.
And 'NO' not all people feel guilt when they do something wrong!!
I believe that all those UN-printed writings would give us even deeper insight into humankind, and the fullness of life.
What a shame they were omitted from the bible.

look...its a lot more complicated that can be described with human vocabulary...human minds (the upper stage) is an associative engine....when you understand soemthing fundamentally, your identity is changed because you need to associate such a concept with a 'critical mass' of other concepts...therefore every concept has the added 'new concept' tied to it in the associative matrix.
Then you have psychological matrix, which is ruled by the lower stage which processes neural prescepts which have come to exist due to its inherent survival value.
But in the end, good and all that which your mind just associated with scripture...are neural prescepts that can be compiled to the term 'spirituality'....this, under the human brain heading, is simply what you can call emotion...and they reach a 'critical mass' called spirituality...this is associated by the higher brain as religion...Its all...
its a lot more complicated...I understand it---and I can tell you that to align your itnerests with that of nature is what makes things work....if you go against nature, you will feel pain...if you go with, pleasure...you cannot choose what you like...you cannot define your physical presence...these are pre-define for oyu....therefore logic is only relevent to you the human as it is meaningful and relevent to your present form...your logic is bound by the very definition of your defined....
a perfect way to control a biological entity is through the neural prescepts which have pre-defined its way of interpration. Its the 'protocal' by which can make the being feel 'pain' and 'pleasure' in different situations...and then the brain will associate these with certain situations...if you change these parameters you can make a human dislike other human beings...or feel compassion toward them....if a mother did not feel the love for their baby, or a brother to a brother...we would not be here...such has come of the neural program that could only be described as a subconciouse 'mind-hive' ....it is the ultimate programming language of the human mind.
'good' is that which is morrally good for the whole, but also for the individual...this sense...although at times can go against the whole..gives the idnividual enough individuality in order to preserve morality...because if you do things just for the whole you can actually be amoral for the whole...so to be moral individually actually makes the whole more moral than if the individual were just moral for the whole...its what gives the mark of the human, etc, etc..
anyway, hope you like my long *** discertation.

I like what you say the Scripture may not always be perfect but it certainly beats a blank most of the time especially for the less creative or those who need a starting point but I must argue the the antiquity sometimes does require a little revision.or upgrading.
the knowledge base of today's world does shed new light to what was availed or useful two thousand years ago but you are right to say some truisms just don't change.
peace out

The Scriptures are more than just a guideline for being good. They are the dogma of a close minded vengeful belief system which is anti-intellectual and cultural limiting. That is the big deal with the scriptures.

I am an atheist but I do believe there is moral value to the scripture. For those that need it or desire it the use of it is perfectly fine with me. Some people need that kind of guidance in their lives. What I resent is the use of these scriptures to push agenda into my life that I reject. Those that believe that it is the true word of their god may live there lives as they please so long as they don't forcefully impose that religion on me.

Scripture is God breathed. It is inspired by the Holy spirit, and man shall live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
My friend It has remained the same for over 4000 years. so we will do well if we can just apply it to our lives.

Think of scripture as advice from god. You can also think of it as a map for when you are lost.
For example I was tempted to cheat on my GF by this really attractive nurse but I decided to turn to the Bible for guidance and found this....
Marriage [is] honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.
Hebrews 13:4

The scriptures are often referred to as a good 'moral' guide for everyone despite belief in it's actual history. However, people like to overlook the horrors in it and prejudice. Rape, murder, slavery, distan and other 'morals' that are said to be okay by God. God himself commits murder and kills innocent children and his own servants just to test their faith and to punish someone else. IS this moral or amoral? What kind of guide to moral righteousness contains such atrocities?
