There's this one guy that never talks to me, but he's always beside me when he can be, and he glances at me sometimes. We only talk during group projects, I just don't know.
I kind of like him, and have shown him that through giving him encouraging signs like smiling back at him, looking at him, etc. (Basically what he does to me, I'm not going to throw myself at him.) He's really confident in class, to all the other girls too, so I don't get why he rarely talks to me.
What does it mean if his voice gets lower and softer when he does talk to me? It's kind of creepy, lol. :O
Main question: how am I supposed to just randomly start a conversation with him? I've never dealt with a guy this shy before.

Ok. Don't start talking about dating stuff or romantic stuff. Talk about normal stuff. Like..."Oh, man, I hope I didn't blow that biology test. How do you think you did?" Or if you are farther along in life....same technique, but..."Oh wow, I hope I didn't kill that sales deal. You don't seem to stress over these things like I do. What is your secret?" You know,..the common ground you both have? Start there. Let the rest develop naturally if it is going to.

Any way you can. Girls are allowed a free pass to be dorky and cute, where as most guys have to play the strong-silent type, or at least feel they have to. So say anything at all, because we're strong-silent and apparently shy too, most of the time...
If you're waiting for a shy guy, you'll be waiting forever. The signs you described aren't going to do much to a shy guy. We never know if you're just being nice or what, so unless you come out and do something that undeniably tells us you're interested, that cannot be misinterpreted... then we'll continue to be shy.

Are you sure you are being obvious to him with your looking and smiling?
What you can do is blow a kiss at him, or wink. Get up the guts and do it. That will get the message across without any undenial.
If this guy really likes you, he will come over and try to talk to you. Let him make that move. If he makes no move even after that, nothing will become of it.
I hear alot of advice of people telling girls to be direct, but I can't help but notice adverse affects most of the time when she is direct.
If you have to be the one to make all the moves, this guy is not that receptive.
Does this guy maybe have a girlfriend? Maybe he likes you, but there's nothing he can do, so he sends out his attraction indirectly.

I'm a shy guy myself, so I can answer from what would make me talk to a girl I like. First off, a guy is shy because he fears rejection, so by showing him that your in to him, it will circumvent that fear and allow open communication. Just compliment him on an inanimate object such as clothing, or maybe ask him a question relating to class work. Good luck.

Well to start things off... This guy prolly doesnt talk to you because he prolly likes you or has a crush on you. He is prolly to scared to talk to you because he doesnt want to mess anything up.
To answer your question though i think you should just start something if you really care that much about this guy. You can ask him if he talks on Yahoo or even ask for his Phone number. Maybe ask if he wants to go out with you for like lunch or coffee or something. But to start a convo bring up something in the project and then slowly flow into something different and then you will have your conversation going. Make sure he feels comfortbale talking to you though. It would really help. Then you 2 are settled!

How do you like someone you barely know? Get to know him as a friend first, that will start the basis of getting to know one another and then possibly figuring out if you like each other.
