Well, in a way it can. Alcohol has a lot of calories, so some people don't feel hungry when they drink all the time. Then they don't eat like they should, and they get malnourished, and even the food they do eat doesn't get absorbed correctly, so they get more malnourished, and yes, they get skinny. However, it is not attractive to be an emaciated drunk, so I wouldn't recommend heavy drinking as a weight loss method.

The Scotch Diet:
Diet books will tell you there's about 100 Calories in a drink of Scotch. You probably learned in school that a calorie is the amount of energy that it takes to raise the temperature of a ml of water by 1 degree Celsius, and for alcohol it's about the same. Put your scotch on the rocks, and it gets down to about 0 degrees Celsius. In drinking it, your body will warm about 50 ml by almost 40 degrees (the rounding off is a cheat, but not much of one), so you'll take in 100 Calories and just by raising it to body temperature you'll use up almost 2000 calories, thus losing weight.
This old joke was out there about 30 or 40 years ago, and still crops up on occasion. The 100 Calories (with a capital C) is of course the same as a kilocalorie, or 1000 calories with a lower-case c, so you're really gaining about 198 Calories (big C) with your scotch on the rocks, but it does sound nice, doesn't it?

Uhh...no. Alcohol has way too much sugar, carbs, and calories to make you skinny even if that is all you consume. Matter of fact you will gain weight because Alcohol dehydrates you causing bloating and water retaintion.I think the reason why you think it can make you skinny is because long after you've stopped drinking it acts as a kind of appetite suppressant. In reality it's because of all the carbs and calories you've consumed you feel like you can go a while without eating. All it really does is put your body into starvation mode and you will end up gaining weight because not eating slows your metabolism.

Alcoholism is a major source of empty calories. So if you drink too much all the time, you will probably gain weight. However there is a point where alcoholics don't want to eat food. This will just make an alcoholic sick because they are not getting enough nutrients.
There is never a good reason to drink too much alcohol.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.
I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.
It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.
Get started today!

No, too much sugar in the drinks. What does make you skinny, is the fact that alcohol suppresses the appetite. Too much drinking leads to too little eating and weight loss.

Researchers now know heavy alcohol intake contributes directly to weight gain regardless of the type of alcohol consumed.
Moderate alcohol drinkers typically add alcohol to their daily caloric intake rather than substituting it for calories from food. Although it would be surprising if this did not contribute directly to weight gain, this question has been a topic of controversy. The study authors explain the relationship between alcohol intake and body weight “remains an enigma to nutritionists.”
In this study researchers from London measured the body mass index of more than 7,600 men between 40 and 59 years old at year one and then at the end of five years. Five years after the screening the men completed a questionnaire on changes in alcohol intake and body weight.
The authors found the prevalence of men with a high body mass index increased significantly from the light-moderate drinker to the heavy drinker regardless of the type of alcohol they drank. Although there was no evidence that moderate drinking leads to weight gain, heavy drinkers, people who consumed more than 30 grams of alcohol per day, showed the greatest weight gain and had the highest body mass index.
Although the type of alcohol consumed did not change the study results, hard liquor drinkers tended to be heavier than beer and wine drinkers. However, this may be associated with differences in lifestyle and eating habits between men who tended to consume hard liquor compared with beer drinkers.

No, but the poor health (from drinking it ALL the time can).
Actually you can gain weight from all the calories in the alcohol, and there is no nutritional value.
