my car is a 1998 chevrolet cavalier. I need to have the driver and passenger airbags installed

Are you replacing airbags that have deployed? Take it to a dealer, don't mess with it. Every job is different; they'll quote the price for you.
If you're trying to add them to a vehicle that did not come from the factory with airbags, you'll have to return the airbags. You can't add airbags after-market.

about 500 bucks if a regular joe did it for ya
about 1400 bucks if some professional did it

I don't know if it would be worth it on a car of this age. This will be very expensive!
