Like TG said..Operating System. In layman's terms a set of programs and files that enable your computer to operate, Hence "Operating System". A computer is essentially an "Electronic brain", Without the OS and subordinate programs, the "Brain" doesn't know what to do.

An OS is an OPERATING SYSTEM. Without an operating system, your computer would be useless. It wouldn't have any instructions to do anything, so you would be starring at a black screen.
