I just got an eight week old kitten last Thursday. When I first got her, she was bright eyed, bubbly, and full of energy- the typical kitten. Two days afterwards, I took her to the vet and had her examinied, and tested for feline lukemia and given a distemper shot which the vet claimed would likely make her sleepy. He was right. It has been three days now since her appointment, she is still sleepy (not even wanting to play with toys), and acting oddly as if she is having a hard time focusing, she has been trying to throw up, and she is making an odd swallowing movement. She stil purrs and such when I hold her, and she follows me around-but she seems almost "stoned". I am thinking about taking her back to the vet tomorrow- but I'm afraid considering how she is after her appointment. The only cat I've ever seen show similar symptoms was a cat infected with Toxoplasmosis. Has anyone else experienced the same thing after a distemper shot? I'd like to hear of any other cases.

See www.petfinder.org where it states that there can be adverse reactions to vaccinations with distemper vaccine being one. Take her to the Vet ASAP for the kitten can be helped and needs to be checked by the Vet so he/she can determine what the kitty needs to get over this. Unfortunately can't predict which kitty will have a adverse or even allergic reaction but do a search on " after effcts(or advearse reactions) to vaccinations in cats to find out ways and means to prevent and/or limit the chances of this occurring with one being sure vaccine not given into the vein. Benadryl can be used to combat side effects of being allergic to vaccines, drugs, also too much toxins in flea meds. Also know that there is a 3 year rabies vaccine available-you must ask for it for Vets seldom inform for prefer the yearly. But cats were developing cancer at the injection sites by being given too many injections at the same area and why the 3year developed. But do not hesitate to take the Kitty BACK to the Vet.I was lucky and never had any adverse reactions to shots.Learned of the Benadryl for sister put flea stuff one uses on rugs and so forth on her cat-naturally thje cat began acting oddly and had I not beaen there and immediately taken to vet woul have bean poisoned but the Benadryl saved it. Good Luck with the Kitty and a Merry Holy Christmas

First of all, Distemper is a disease of canines not felines. Cats get different diseases than dogs do and are vaccinated for their specific preventable diseases. Yes, cats do react to vaccinations. If the vet used a modified live virus vaccine, your kitten will be reacting to this invasion of virus' into her body. This is how they build immunity. She will be running a fever, not eating, drinking, or playing much. She will want to sleep for the better part of 4 days. After that she will be up and about and her usual self. These vaccinations are a must now days to keep you baby safe and healthy. There are so many diseases out there now you can't take any chances. Don't let her outside. Keep her indoors for her entire life. She won't get sick, run over by a car, eaten by a coyote, shot by some stupid person, poisoned, in a cat fight, tortured by some or the same stupid person, or stolen. Next time ask your vet to use a killed vaccine. It doesn't cause a reaction. Have fun with your new kitten!

It sounds like she is having a vaccine reaction. Taking her back to the vet won't hurt. as the issue is the shot itself and not the doctor. She may need some Benadryl. In any case, it sounds like she needs medical attention.

My kittens react some what the same, but after a couple days if they are not back to normal I would at least call the vet and talk to them about it.

She could be having an reaction to the shot, and taking her back to the vet is probably the smartest thing to do.

Call your vet and report this. The cat may have to have a smaller dose next time.

A few things: 1. Clean around his nose and mouth with wet wipes to make breathing easy. 2. Put him in a cozy space - I know cats enjoy being cuddled up in a cozy space ie. box with blanket around him. 3. Help him relax - gentle strokes and sometimes quiet repetitive sounds such as clock ticking will help them relax
