I use a rubbermaid type box. My boy is a digger, and high sided litter boxes didn't help. He also refused to use one with a cover. I haven't been vacuuming up piles of tossed out litter every day since I switched.
That said, you'll never be able to completely contain it since some sticks to the cat as he leaves the box. He'll end up tracking some out, but it does help with the litter that he kicks around while digging.

Get one with a lid. They have enclosed ones.
There is one in a cabinet that the cat has to climb into. The cat walks over a grate over the litter box when going in and coming out so that no litter escapes the cabinet.
I'll try to find the link. Hold on.

You can't really avoid it. You can try the mats, and you can try switching litters, but in the end, litter is going to get caught in the pads of your cat's feet, and will be tracked outside of the litterbox.
Keep the litterbox in a bathroom or other tiled room, and keep a broom & dustpan nearby. It's no big deal.

I keep my cat's litter box in the bathtub. I also don't use regular litter boxes. I get storage boxes at Walmart and use those. They are higher and bigger. My cats seem to like them better. They also seem to keep more litter in than out. I also keep a dust pan and little hand broom close to the bathtub to sweep up the litter that seems to jump out of the box.

if you buy a litter box with a cover it helps alot but also keep a mat under it (use a sticky mat so the litter sticks) i had the same probalm but now i don't it really works.

You can buy cat boxes with covers. It's like a little house that the cat can get into through a hole on one end. I wouldn't have a cat box without a cover. They aren't that much more expensive than a regular cat pan type box.

Buy a LitterMaid with the ramp and/or the LitterMaid tent (cover). That helped me with this problem a little. Unfortunately, the litter will never be 100% contained unless you put booties on your cats' feet, and you know how well they'll go for THAT! ;-)
