I left on February 26th 1992 and never went back. There are so many nice places in the world to live, why would I want to go back?
Answer: as long as they want. That's the beautiful thing about being a US Citizen, you can leave whenever you want.

Indefinitely. There is no rule that a US citizen must live or even be in the US.
If the child of a pair of US citizens was born overseas, and obtain his/her passport as a US citizen from a US embassy. He/she can live his/her entire life as a US citizen without ever setting foot on US soil.
It's not how long you can stay abroad, it's how long the other countries will allow you to stay. And there are dozens of countries that welcome foreigners almost indefinitely.

It depend on the country and your purpose. For instance you could only stay in Japan as a tourist for 90days but if you are there on work visa you can stay as long as your job needs you to be there. As I mentioned it depend on the country.
