This is very simple.... First the most basic assumption in this problem is all of the men eat equally.... Once this is made then it is a very straight forward problem..

After 4 days the food will be left for 1200 men for 24 days.... But some of them leave and hence the food is available for 32 days.
So according to proportions the extra days were because of those extra men who left..
For 1200 men food is left for 24 days
for 'x' men the food is left for 32 days
since men increases day decreases, it is an inverse relationship problem and we can find x as,
x=(24/32)*(1200)=900 men...(who remained after 4 days)
hence the no of men left==300 men...
hence your answer...

Ok, it took me a while to figure this out, but I hope I am right, since I hate being wrong. I like math and here is my calculations.
Now if you look at the question... it says that 1200 men will live 28 days off the food, then 600 men would live 56 days (28*2).

However the question also includes the information that after four days some men had left, therefore, were are going to have 1200 men living on the food remaining 24 days (28-4days used)... therefore 600 men could live 48 remaining days off the food. (24*2)

However, it says that some men left after 4 days and they had 32 more days to live off the food, making it the total of 24+32=56 >>> now this is where I thought the tricky part was...

you have to make an equation were you would show a connection:

600/48=x/56...... this is the right equation I presume

What this equations says that 600 men would live off the food for 48 days and "x" men would live off the food for 56 days...

therefore solving the problem we get x=700, saying that 500 men left after 4 days (1200-700=500).

If you choose this answer as the best I would think that I gave you the right answer....

1200 Men = 28 Days
then for 1 Day = 42.85 (round off to 43)

After 4 days it equals to 32 then 32-28 = 4
Therefore 4/28*1200 = 171
171 Men left for 4 days

so the total number is 1200-171 = 1029

Therefore the total number of men left after 4 days = 1029

Answer is 1029

They had 1200(28) rations. After 4 days they had 1200(24) rations. 1200(24) = x(32) because the remaining rations lasted the x remaining men for 32 days.

Answer is 1200(24)/32 = 900 men remained.
