I have started back going to the gym reguralry. I start of by doing crunches and everytime I get done I have this sharp pain in my stomach like on the side. How do I get rid of this pain? If I keep doing it will it stop? How do I get the pain to leave?

do crunches every other day, so you can give your muscles time to heal. the pain is probobly a burn in the muscle - nothing to worry about its normal im sure it'll eventually will go away one's your body builds and builds more resistance as you get into your excercises.

It could be that you have an injury (talk to a doctor, physical therapist, etc.), it could be a muscle cramp (make sure you stretch), or it could be related to hydration and diet (are you drinking enough water? do you have a vitamin / mineral dificiency, like too low potassium?).
If you're at the gym, why not grab a trainer and ask him/her to watch your form on the crunches? He/she should help you figure out if that's a factor and/or help you develop some other exercises that might work better for you.

pain is not normal or good-----"no pain no gain," is a quote that is not accurate. you shouldnt be experiencing pain. stop what youre doing. youve obviously been away from the gym for a long time,,,,you should EASE back into it work up gradually to the crunches...youre body is obviously telling you youre not ready for it yet.

Try and do a different form of the crunches. Dont workout directly after a meal. Do them slow and intense, not fast.

Try getting on a fitness ball and stretching your abdomen before your crunches.
