Anatomically, men and women have the same number of ribs - 24. When this fact was noted by the Flemish anatomist Vesalius in 1524 it touched off a wave of controversy, as it seemed to contradict Genesis 2:21:"And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man"

however in some translations the word does not mean rib, it means "side"

An old story of the rib is told by Rabbi Joshua:
"God deliberated from what member He would create woman, and He reasoned with Himself thus: I must not create her from Adam's head, for she would be a proud person, and hold her head high. If I create her from the eye, then she will wish to pry into all things; if from the ear, she will wish to hear all things; if from the mouth, she will talk much; if from the heart, she will envy people; if from the hand, she will desire to take all things; if from the feet, she will be a gadabout. Therefore I will create her from the member which is hid, that is the rib, which is not even seen when man is naked. ..."[

Why do you believe that any detail of the Adam & Eve story is true? ...or do you?

Does it seem reasonable to you that this story may be erroneous in several ways? Are you also following the anthropological research of the fossilized 'Lucy" and the spin-off DNA genetic studies which appear to support the theory that the path of man's origin stems from central Africa, or are you content to gather all of your acquired knowledge from just one antiquated source?

Is it truth you wish to discover or are you on a search for an interesting tale of fantasy? Are you asking this question for its literary value and because you would like to second-guess and read into the character construction of "God," i.e., to understand the image of him as if he was a reality?

It seems unreasonable that "God" would chose to "create" Eve the hard way, doesn't it? Perhaps the story is just told that way to add mystery, or miracle or to stem interest in "God's" mystic ability... you know, to capture the reader's attention.

Well, whatever. The story is just a story anyway, isn't it...

18And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
23 And Adam said:
“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. Genesis 2:18-25

Would you believe that its to show that she is the same as Adam?

Edit:

To all the answerers: I don't think anything in the question points to the poster assuming that the Adam and Eve story was literally true. The poster is just asking why it was that way.

Because the bible was written by men, and what better way to make women indebted to men then to tell a story where man gave a rib so that woman could have life. Now you know one of the reasons that I am not a religious person.

This stuff is all hogwash my dear. Adam and Eve are just generic names for the supposed 1st man and woman. The rib story is just as bogus as the easter bunny, the tooth fairy and santa claus.

Actually, if you read Genesis carefully, there are 2 creation stories in it. In the lessor known one, god creates man and woman at the same time...This is held by many biblical scholars, including Jewish rabbis, etc. to be the older and "truer" version.

because "the LORD God made a woman from the rib. he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, for she was taken out of man." For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." (Genesis 2:22-24)
