breathes heavily the entire time. He's better when his window's down but it's too cold in the winter. How can I cure him of this? It's so irritating!

I love him very much but on a long trip it drives me bonkers! BTW, he's a glen of imaal terrier that I adopted from the animal shelter. It's a very rare breed from Ireland. We are attached to the hip and wouldn't trade him for anything in the world! woof

I think he is very excited, all those new sights and smells!
Perhaps he has been (inadvertently) trained that if he breaths heavily, you will open the window, he gets what he wants.
Dogs are so cunning :)
As for a cure, try taking him out more often perhaps so that he gets a chance to smell all the cool smells out there, or roll down the window for just a bit, then firmly tell him "Thats it"
sooner or later he might stop his trying to get you to keep the window down. (re-train him to what you prefer not what he wants)
with rewards for good behavior

Maybe he's nervous with the closed-in environment. Try putting things in the car that make him feel like home, like a favorite toy, a doggy bone, or his little bed :) That may help him calm down without having to put the window down. Good luck!

Since you love your dog so much, it sounds like you're going to have to sacarfice your comfort for his comfort, so let the window and you'll have a much calmer and happier dog.

I am sure your dog will show you lots of love later by licking you and giving you hi five.

I would turn on the vent & let my dog ride up front. He would put his nose up to the vent & it was like having the window down to him.

He might be breathing heavily due to excitement. I don't see why that's irritating, or that you think it must have a cure.

He's just a little over excited. My chihuahua actually gives himself asthma attacks when he gets too excited.

there's no cure that's how dogs express themselves when they can't stick their nose out the window.
i know my dog does it too that and whines best bet is to just ignore it.
