We just put our dog in training classes starting yesterday and I had started to use some of the techniques I had learned in the class starting today. My dog is about 3 months old and today when I went to pick him up he bit my arm and it was pretty severe. I didn't know what caused it: my picking him up or if he was just mad???

first make sure there was not a reason for him to be in pain, a sore or something on him that you pressed on. if not, the next time he does that, scruff him, grab the extra skin firmly, but not visciously behind his neck above his shoulders and put him on his back in your arms on the floor or whatever and very firmly say NO BITE! don't yell, don't be angry, he's learning, he doesn't know it's up to you to tell him what's right and what's wrong. hold him on his back until he relaxes and it not fighting you. he may scream and whine and try to get away but don't let him. don't hurt him just hold him in place. once he relaxes and succumbs let him up, don't praise him, just let him up and go on about what you were doing. repeat this process as many times as it takes. you're not hurting him, this is how his mother corrected him and instintually he will know he's doing wrong, even if he fights you. what kid likes to be told no?

if you coddle the dog and say oh he was mad or pet him after he tries to bite you, you are telling that dog that biting is an acceptable way to get what he wants. thanks to people like that veterinary employees get bit every day, and even more importantly regular individuals who come near your dog, if he thinks snipping will get him his way he will use this for other things and you're taking the chance of having a dog no one likes to be near that is not fun for him or you, take the opprotunity while he is young to teach him. would you allow your child to kick you every time they didn't get what they wanted? normal people would tell them this is not acceptable, because violence no matter what is not.

Most likely you picked the animal up wrong and hurt it.

Try learning the proper way to pick up your dog.
