Wow...that's a tough one. There are MANY theories on this. But here is what worked for me (I lost 40 pounds over 5 months last year and have kept it all off for over 6 months):
Losing weight is simple: calories in, calories out. If you don't know how many calories are in something when trying to lose weight, don't eat it. You should keep track of your calories every day. I used a food journal and wrote down everything I ate or drank for 6 months. That does not mean I never ate anything "bad", it's just that I was always conscious of what I was eating and most of the time was quite strict.
Specific foods to stay away from: foods that have only "empty" calories like soda, candy, cookies, chips, ice cream. These have very little to no nutrional value but tons of calories and fat. Also stay away from processed or "ready-made" foods like "helpers", frozen pizzas, etc.
Be careful about sauces and dressings-- you might be shocked to know how many calories there are in that extra mayonnaise on your sandwich!
Look for foods high in fiber. Fiber cancels out carbohydrates (gram to gram) and is incredibly good for you. It helps cleanse your system and aid in proper digestion. Snack foods like plain popcorn have lots of carbs, yes, but it is very high in fiber and quite low in calories. I ate popcorn every night on my diet (but remember, not loaded with salt or butter!). Orville Redenbacher's 94% fat free is a good one. Or just pop your own on the stove with a small amount of soybean oil.
Always a good idea to eat: high fiber cereals that have moderately low calorie counts like Cheerios. Just look at the labels. You will learn how to compare products when you are shopping to choose the lowest calorie / highest fiber items. Also vegetables of all and any kind (watch our for corn though, it's high in starch so higher in calories). Also always good is fruit, beans (really high in fiber), poultry, lowfat cottage cheese.
I know people will tell you don't eat pasta or potatoes, but I'm not going to tell you that. I ate them in moderation and it worked just fine. Pasta has lots of calories, so just watch the quantity. But I would never say not to ever eat those things.
I also did great eating those frozen Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice meals for lunches. And they are so quick and easy and well-balanced. But don't feel guilty if one of those is not enough! Eat a little bit of cottage cheese or some other small side item with it if you are not satisfied with that.
Oh yeah....EXERCISE! If you hate it or have a hard time forcing yourself to do it, any kind of physical activity will do...walk the mall, do a home project, etc. Just spend less time sitting-- it really makes a difference.
I wish you the best of luck and hope this helped some.

I found this on this website. There are more tips and info. 1. If what you are eating has less than 1 carb, count it as 1 carb just to be sure. 2. Totally avoid caffine at least for the first two weeks on the program. 3. Drink a MINIMUM of 8 glasses of plain water or seltzer daily. 4. Don't weigh yourself more than once a week 5. Take starting measurements as well as weight - sometimes you'll lose inches before pounds 6. Avoid any type of "low carb" sweetener for the first two weeks 7. Don't compare your loss to someone else's - this is a YMMV thing (your milage may vary) 8. Stalls are common around the third week so don't panic 9. If you follow your plan to the T and don't lose, consider Candida as a possibility and avoid vinegar, cheese, mushrooms and any other fermented food 10. Have bloodwork done before starting so you have a comparison 11. Cholesterol can be elevated in the first few weeks til your body adjusts - make sure your doctor knows that you're doing low carb and when you started 12. Don't blame the diet if you don't read your plan book -- blame the diet if you don't read the labels -- Don't blame the diet if you don't follow the diet

1)First, losing weight does not remove fat cells so don't gain any more weight if you can help it.
2) Avoiding nutritional deficiencies is important to losing weight, so buy a mutivitamin and multimineral supplement. If they are making you feel different, take them every other day - actually it would be best to start out taking them every other day.
3)Stay far away from corn syrup and High Fructose corn syrup. Stay away from soda completely becuase the pH of soda is very low and will push your pH down making you feel tired or wired, depends.
4) See what I wrote about losing weight and potassium (give the page about 10 seconds to load) here: http://actualcures.com/index.html#12
5) My personal experience is that nothing puts weight on faster than macaroni and cheese.
Hope this is enough to point you in the right direction for the New Year

Foods high in fat
Pastries, donuts, cakes, cookies, sweet rolls
Crackers (other that saltines)
Chips (potato chips, corn chips)
Cheeses (other than cheeses made from skim milk)
Nuts, peanuts, peanut butter
Corn, soy, olive, peanut, coconut and all cooking oils.
Margarine, shortening
Butter, cream, ice cream
Fried foods, hot dogs, luncheon meats
But more than just avoidig high fat foods, its much more important to eat less but much more often. This allows your body time to burn it as fuel. Eat only until YOURE NOT HUNGRY not until YOURE FULL. There is a huge difference. Also drink plenty of water - at least a gallon per day especially if you exercise.
Here are some other tips.....
Eat only until you feel satisfied.
Begin meals with clear soups, broth or something light.
Eat vegetables, grain foods or other starchy foods and protein foods at each meal.
Eat slowly so your body has time to know when it's full.
Drink 8 glasses of water a day.
Exercise.
Stock your desk or home cupboards with low-fat snacks.
Don't keep high-fat foods in the house.
Avoid alcohol.
Let yourself indulge now and then. This helps you not feel deprived, which may
cause you to eat too much later.
Good Luck to you.

junk food of course. Buy whole wheat products, bread, pasta, brown rice, etc. Try not to get anything overly manufactured. You needs lots of veggies and fruits, both frozen and fresh. Though if you buy frozen fruit be sure it's not in syrup as this adds a lot of sugar. Lean meats, turkey, chicken, small size steaks. Hamburger is a big no-no, if you must though by ground sirloin and eat it in moderation. Above all make sure you buy foods you like.

just buy vegetables and a small amount of fruit. regular oatmeal.
do not add sugar. drink seltzer water, and v-8 juice.
OJ is too sweet. too many calories cabbage, carrots, broccoli, cucumbers, celery season with curry. broiled chicken breast, broiled salmon.everything in small portions. cut your portions in half. yes you will be hungry. its better to be hungry and slimmer than to be satisfied and fat. don't you think?
Also walk briskly for an hour every day. you do have the time if you really want to. good luck you can do it. just stick with the program, it is all about integrity. and choice. choose to do the right thing. and keep your integrity intact. slim down by doing the above or be a fatty. it is just simply your choice. is it more painful to do the above program or is it more painful to be a fatty.

The most important thing you can do is to cut down on your portions, and do not over eat. Don't buy junk food like chips, cookies, cakes, sugary cereals, soda, ect. because these foods have very little nutrition and pack on the calories. Try to buy more fruits & vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low fat dairy. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Stay away from anything with a lot of sugar (candy, donuts, pastries, frozen cakes), junk food (chips), sodas (coke, dr.pepper), or anything with a lot of salt. Buy WHOLE WHEAT bread, varies veggies, and fruit.

Don't buy sweet or fattening items... If you want to eat healthy buy mostly fresh veggies and soups and meat. Stick to the basics and avoid all the processed foods.
