i got mine from a shelter too, and he hates his kennel but when he's bad, he knows where to go. the dog trainer told us that he has separation anxiety issues, cause he also hates being left alone even out of the cage. he will destroy whatever he can get his paws on. boots, underwear, lamp, camera bag, scope for hunting,..................you name it so we learned to seclude him off to just the kitchen and keep it clutter free so he is less tempted.................. good luck.

Wouldn't you freak out if I put you in a cage? I don't believe this to be productive for the dog, what has the dog done to deserve this kind of treatment after all, you said, the dog came from a shelter, and no he may not be used to being locked up in a cage.

The dog is perhaps scared or wants attention. I know when I put my dog her "her room" when I leave she barks and whines like crazy, and she understands that I will be gone and stops. I don't think any dog is use to being in a kennel by herself/himself at first, but they eventually get use to it. My puppy uses her kennel as her home and sleeps in it and plays her toys in it and occasionally runs in it when she's done something bad.

Honestly when I recieved my dog she was uncomfortable being in a crate at firs., I actually, come to think of it, don't know how she got so comfortable with her crate and she came from a shelter perhaps because she was only 4 months when I recieved her.

He may not be used to being in a small cage. He should get used to it. My dogs also hated it when I got them. They were both about a year old when I got them and were not crate trained. Now, I am very happy to say that they are excellent crate dogs.
I think one important thing NOT to do is, and some may disagree, is use the crate as punishment. I never did that. I always tried to make them think of their crates as happy places. They now know that when they go in the crates, it is quiet time.
I know it is hard to leave them in their crate when you leave the house or go to bed, but it really is for their good, especially if they are like mine and tend to get themselves into trouble when you are not home. They are safe in the crate. Just be sure to always provide them with water. You can also leave safe nylabones and toys in with them to help relieve boredom.

Separation anxiety. Our Aussie does that too; she acts like she is dying. But just let her cry her self out. I like to put a blanket over the kennel, that it seems to calm her down.

you would want to ask your vet first but there is harmless herbal like
stuff that you can mix a little bit right into the water and it would calm the dog

He probably has seperation anxiety. When I first got my Jack Russell, he went insane when we left him in his crate. When you put him in the crate, give him treats and praise him. Talk to your vet, and see if he has any other suggestions..
