My chihuahua just got sprayed at close range by a skunk. He ran in the house, rubbed up on some furniture, and jumped on my lap before I realized what the smell was. What is best for getting skunk out of 1. my dog, 2. my skin (so I don't smell at work tomorrow), and 3. my house and furniture???

I read other answers that said peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap... vinegar... tomato juice... and massengil douche (seriously). Which of these REALLY works??? I have a white collar job and I don't want to be smelling up the whole office tomorrow. HELP!!!!!

I have 2 chihuahuas and they are both sitting in the bathtub right now lathered in the peroxide / baking soda / soap mixture. I'll give them about 10 more mins before rinsing. Thanks.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS SPRAYED BY A SKUNK.

It's that time of year again when the skunks are out nightly fattening up for the winter. Unfortunately, this means more encounters between dog and skunks. Knowing what to do and having the ingredients on hand will save you and your dog from suffering any more than necessary.

Skunk wash can easily made at home from common ingredients found in your house. I strongly recommend you buy enough ingredients for a few washings, print the following recipe and keep it all where you can get to it quickly (last time we used it was at midnight just as we thought we were going to bed).

There are two recipes. The recipe with the smaller ratio of peroxide would be preferable for dogs whose coat color may be affected adversely by the peroxide.

Recipe #1
1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 teaspoon of liquid soap

Recipe #2
1 pint 3% hydrogen peroxide
2/3 cup baking soda
1 tablespoon liquid soap
Mix this up at the time of use (the mixture must be fresh to work properly). Pour or sponge it on dog. Knead it well into his coat. Be careful to keep the formula out if the dog's eyes, nose and mouth; you can use a sponge to carefully wipe it onto his/her face. Let it sit five minutes then rinse with plain water. Becareful not to get it in the dogs eyes. Cover them with a wash cloth if needed. If a second dose is needed mix a new batch from scratch. The mixture reacts with the chemicals in the skunk spray and oxidizes them. If the mixture is not fresh, the reaction will not work.

Do Not Store leftover shampoo.

Tomato juice works well. After washing your dog put it outside. The outside air will help get rid of the skunk smell. Let your furniture air out also. Rubbing some baking soda on your furniture will also help.

I work at a vet clinic, and we use equal parts of peroxide and water, a few tablespoons of baking soda, and about a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Apply this liberally to the dog and let sit for at least 10 minutes, and you may need to apply it again since it was such a close shot. You can use this mixture on yourself and you carpet and furniture (just test a small area first to make sure that it won't stain).

Tomato juice works!!!!! I grew up in the country as a curious child with my even more curious dogs and we "met" several skunks in our day!! Vinegar and tomato juice (but not at the same time) go now before your nose seeks revenge!!!!!!!

I've heard about the tomato juice and vinegar so I guess you're best bet is to try those first. If it doesn't work go to www.ask.com and see if it can give you a better answer... Just type in your question and see what happens.

YES SERIOUSLY DOUCHE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST. my dogs get sprayed at least twice a year. and if the actual scent is on you, well get a few more boxes. sorry dude but if you want it gone, that's the answer. and it might take awhile to get it out of your house. but off the dog itself is to go buy some douche. unscented and unmedicated. if she's a big dog around 50 lbs you need to buy around 5 boxes of douche so a chihuahua i would use 2 boxes. and pour it on her and leave it on for around 10 mins then rinse it off. i would definatly get her out of the house though, did you not smell her coming before you let her in?

don't use hydrogen peroxide, it can bleach out your dog's hair and if they lick it the peroxide will make them vomit, and who wants a stinky, bleached out vomiting dog?

nature's miracle skunk off is available, but smell it first, to me it smells just like skunk, which i don't understand why they would make a product to get rid of skunk smell, and scent it with skunk smell. suck it up, and go get some douche, tell the cashier you're using it to get skunk smell off your dog, it will make her night. but as long as it works who cares right?

Actually douche really does work. You can also try Nature's Miracle as well. You can find that at most pet stores.
