I think you're probably having trust issues with your bird. What, in my humble opinion is more than likely happening is that your bird hasn't learned that you're the good guy yet. When he does, you'll both live happier lives.
If you can get your hands on a copy of the "Happy Bappy Fun Book" (a humans guide to companion parrots) by Sally Blanchard, she'll teach you all you need to know about earning the trust of your buddy.
A few pointers...
If you request your bird to do something, make him do it. By not following through, all you teach the bird is that he's in control, not you.
Trust is a huge issue. You can't be agressive, but you can't be a wuss either. You have to go at the bird with mid-level expectations, and build from there.
Biting is almost always out of fear, anxiety or flat out agression. Figure out what he's afraid of, and why he feels he needs to protect himself, and ease him back into that same situation, but try different approaches. If you're just trying to touch him, get him out, put him on a T-Stand or the back of a chair and slowly introduce your hand to him. Show him the back of your hand (where he can't grab on and make the fun red stuff come out), and then slowly bring it up to his face. He needs to know your not going to hurt him under any circumstances, and you need to know he's not going to bite you under any circumstances. Take your time, and keep trying...
You're taking a step in the right direction just by asking for help in understanding! If you need help, e-mail me and I'll do what I can.

You must be very gentle, and talk very affectionately to her, the way you would to a small child. Probably she is just playing, but if she hears or senses anger or fear in your voice, she will react negatively, and become brave. Tell her very gently and softly not to bite, and be good, it may take a while to change undesirable behavior, but be patient. NEVER RAISE YOUR VOICE, SHOW ANGER OR PUNISH IN ANY WAY---it is very easy to earn their love, and it is their nature... Let her be as close to you as possible, and as much as possible, when you can. If you are at your computer, let her sit on your shoulder, or the back of the chair, if watching TV, put her on your shoulder, knee, chair, or anywhere close. It is important to keep her out of a cage as much as you can, even if you leave the door open, and put her on top of it.. When you eat let her have some of whatever you are having, along with you--vegetables, fruits, noodles spaghetti, macaroni&cheese (anything but chocolate, or avocado)--she will love you the more for it!!! Birds are very affectionate, and love to be on their human's shoulder as much as you can let them. If you leave her in the cage for hours and hours, she will begin to get possessive and try to defend it. That is probably why and when she is pecking at you. Keep her near or on your shoulder, as much as you can, show her all the love you can, and she will respond with a devotion and love that only a bird can show. the kindness and gentleness you show, will be returned in a relationship with the little guy that will astound you!!! They spend their whole life with one mate, and when they bond with a human, she will expect the same devotion from you!!! Good Luck,&Be Gentle--- birdman

You can try giving your bird toys in it's cage to play with. A bored bird can be an aggressive bird. Toys will help it to take out any frustrations it has and then maybe it won't peck you. I have found that giving my birds small pieces of millet (when they are out of the cage, sitting on my hands) makes it a pleasant experience for them. They love millet, and he will learn to associate your hands with a favorite treat instead. Good Luck.

Well, I have always heard that when a bird tries to bite or peck out of meanness to thump him on the beak. Not hard . Be gentle but enough to let him know that he cannot do that. And eventually he will learn not to. But talk to him and let him know that you are not going to hurt him.

With my bird, I would gently push my finger into its beak and not overreact I would say a firm "No." If I overreacted, the bird would bite me more for the attention. If you have to, give the bird a time out for 5 minutes to its cage.I hope this helped and don't give up. Have a tweet Christmas.

Hey! well, i have a cochatiel too and it does that too!
that is just a bird thing.
but u could try to spend more time w/ it and play w/ it more often.
u should play w/ it atleast three times a day for 15 minutes.
and put a cuddle bone in the cage to prevent the habit.

I always whistle or tweat like a bird real close to their cage until they come close to you and eventually they will want to eat out of your mouth instead of pecking at you. It really does work.

Whenever your cockatiel starts to bite, offer him some millet. A friend who has cockatiels says this worked for her.
Also, put a few bird toys in his cage so he can bite them and not you. Get a cuttlebone for him to keep his beak trimmed.

My bird was evil when i got him.... he would bite. But i was stubborn,,, by whistling and talkin to it from outside the cage will help you two bond. THe more attention you give it..the more it will open up and become quite affectionate. It takes a little time but its worth it. I love my bird....Shout out to Bird Pitt. (gotta love his name!!)
