Well, if the nose swab came back positive it means they have the actually flu (not like a 24 or 48 hour bug that we all call the flu.) The genuine flu makes you very, very sick and can take a long time to recover. Our local dr's are telling parents no school for 10 days minimum. A fever helps to burn off the body's infection however letting it go too high can be dangerous and basically just makes the kid feel gross. Try feeding them ice chips with juice or water on it (whatever they can stomach), giving them popsicles and letting them soak in a lukewarm bath - not cold as that will cause shock and vomiting. Also you can give them their normal dose of Tylenol and then 3 hours later give them a normal dose of Advil. You can repeat this cycle with 3 hours in between doses through the night. If they are still having trouble controlling the fever by morning I'd call the Dr or nurse's line. Also, remember that it won't hurt them to run a fever of 100-102 for a bit to help speed killing the virus, if you can keep it beat back to that point they should be fine. WASH YOUR HANDS...you don't want this too :)

I can Relate!! It sounds like my 4 children have the exact same thing, whatever thing that may be. This most likely is a viral type of sickness in which an antibiotic won't clear away. Saturday, my 4 yr old had a fever of 104 that was hard to break, and the fevers just keep coming back. Now, today he started coughing a lot. My poor baby.
My 6 year old had 4 days of high fever 102-103, he allready has asthma so his coughing increased. He seems to be improving though.
My 3 year old was the first one to start with the fever last week. He had 4 days of very high fevers. Now on a new antibiotic for the strep that everyone had 2 weeks ago that he didn't get rid of,
My 22 month old just had a 102.7 temp a few hours ago. He's in the middle of the tough part right now. He also has an ear infection.
My 63 year old mother (who lives with us) says it's her worse cold ever.
When will it end? Hmm.....Probably February!!!
No, I sure hope not. Hopefully very very soon. But, I, like you, am very worried for my babies. I am about to research Rotovirus next. All four have other symptoms as well and have been prescribed different meds.
Dole Frozen Fruit Bars are a Humongous hit in my house, as well as popcicles, orange juice, apples, orange slices, apple sauce. I buy pallets of little bottles of water and partially freeze them. The kids drink a ton of agua this way. And I break out sippys for whoever wants one. My 3 and 4 year olds love this! Only the baby gets a sippy around here normally. This is encouraging them to drink more. An older kid could get a sports bottle or something.
For a fever I break out 5 wash clothes, wet them with cool water, wring it out well and place one on the head on each foot and around each hand and wrist. Just for a couple minutes, than I turn the wash clothes, then leave on another couple minutes and this is usually the way the fevers always break for my boys. I don't like to alternateTylenol and Motrin. If it is a high fever I like Tylenol, and than more can be given sooner as needed...4 hours. I think too much of these drugs can be very harmful. That's scary to me. For a lower fever I do Motrin. If Tylenol doesn't wipe the fever all the way away after two doses, than I give Motrin next.
Time to go run a 'vitals' check on the lil rascals. Wish me well!
For Once, I actually want my boys to cause some trouble around here!!!
Good luck and Good Blessings.

It all depends on the child. sometimes it ends in a few days and other days it takes a few weeks. if Ibuprophine is not doing it, then when you go back to the doctor's, ask if there is anything they can do for her. If children have fevers for a long time, it can cause some problems for them. try giving her a luke warm bath, in pj's or a nightgown, and us just a sheet to put over them so they don't get to warm and make the fever go up. Fever's normally go up at night anyway's.

Isn't it dangerous when their fever goes over 104? I know infants can handle high fevers, but wasn't aware toddler and school age children were able to handle them.
It sounds like the ROTOVIRUS or some other nasty bug. You should definately see your doc asap. I know here in Ohio there are many bugs going around that are life threatening to children. Several firends children have been hospitalized. One has rotovirus and isn't expected to live.
Please don't delay take them to the doctor.
If they don't improve take them to the ER.
Try a tepid (lukewarm) bath
Or, a mix of water and rubbing alcohol about 1/2 of each and dab the mix on them with a wash cloth.
Check and double check in the night because fevers spike in the night. Be prepared to head to the ER if necessary.

Not a doctor, however one told me for my nephew the best way to break a fever that hangs in there is alternate between Tylenol and ibuprofen for each dose. Sounds like your babies are miserable. Don't know when it will end, however their fevers are quite high. I heard 102-103 is the highest you let it get before doctors and hospitals are involved......
Don't mean to scare you...again, not a doctor, but maybe you should call theirs tonight just to make sure. don't be afraid to "bug" him.....he gets paid HANDSOMELY for this and they are the only babies you have!
Hope it's gone for Santa's big day! God Bless

You might try switching between Tylenol and Motrin fever reducers...they can build up a tolerance to one and going back and forth can eliminate that. In all, as long as they are in the safe temperature range you will have to deal with it. There are some nasty illnesses going around and luckily you don't have one with them. On a good note, fevers are a sign of fighting illness. Best wishes to you and your family on these crazy illnesses going around.

hi. it really bites when our kids are sick. i wish i could take their place when mine are ill. i just wanted to mention that a quick way to lower a fever is to fill the tub with lukewarm water & have them sit awhile. my kids get high fevers & it really helps. it's dangerous for it to be so high. make sure you are not layering their clothing & that they don't have too many blankets when they go to bed. liquids are a plus. pedialite, kool aid, & sports drinks help. good luck hope they feel better.
