In the movies, the firearms use blanks as not to injure anyone. If this is done in real life the bullet would if shot straight up, come straight down, if shot at an angle, come down in an arc. But Movies use blanks so there are no bullets just the sound effect of the shot

What goes up MUST come down. Unless you are discharging a gun loaded with blank cartridges, the bullet will come down somewhere. AND it will come down hard enough to damage property and injure or kill people.
I am a police officer in a large southern city. I have nearly every New Year's Day seen cars damaged by returning bullets. Once a bullet penetrated the steel hood of my patrol car. Just last year a 7.62 bullet penetrated my friend's Mustang car's Fiberglas hood while it was parked in her driveway.
What you see Hollywood do in the movies is usually a bunch of hooey. Please don't discharge live ammo into the air for any reason. If you must do this, then use blanks. Otherwise, if legal, pop firecrackers or better still, go see the fireworks. BE safe.
Best,
H

In movies, they use blanks, but in real life, if a bullet is shot into the air, it'll travell a long distance, but eventually it'll come down, I think there actually are records of bullets that have dropped out of the sky and killed/hit people.

I wondered the answer to this myself. For live rounds.I watched a program on the discovery channel called myth busters. They found that it depends on the angle in which the gun was held or pointed if straight up at 90o the bullet wabbles back and forth and doesn't not deliver a lethel hit.At an angle as it is peaking it starts to fall faster and can send someone to the hospital or kill them because it picks up speed as it falls. It depends on the wind where it falls.Yes it can and does hit people.

in movies they use blanks so therefore there is no bullet, But if you shoot a real gun with a real bullet/shell it will go up then come back down to earth and yes they have been ppl killed for ppl shooting real rounds into the air " this one that i know for sure in the state of NC a man shot a round up into the air and it came down several miles away hitting a lady in the head killing her the man was tried and convicted of involuntary manslaughter

Depending on the angel a few miles. if it is 5 degrees off of 90 the bullet will go 2 miles. People have been killed by stray bullets like that but they have to hit the person in just the right spot. it doesn't come down as fast and it doesn't have the spin like it does when it comes out of a barrel so it rarely happens.

In this subject, there has been much speculation.
Does the bullet come down to injure passerbys?
A simple theory is that the bullet, when it reachs a certian velocity in the atmosphere, grows an odd magnetic disruption field, effectively ripping a hole in known space, and entering a limbo called "the twilight zone".
Where does this bullet go?we have no idea.
It may be that the bullet may exit the area in the same velocity it entered, possibly killing an important diplomat in another dimension, which causes universal chaotic war for millions of years, until the scream of the last being is heard resounding through the cosmos,as a monument to our human weakness.
They use blanks in movies,duh.

Probably all the answers so far are correct, or at least sound sensible, but if you watched the movie "Nobody's Fool" starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith, you'll remember a quote in the movie in which the judge or police chief told the officer who did shoot in the air, that his bullet scared an old lady off the toilet two blocks away, or somesuch location. So, believe what you will, lolololol!!!!! God Bless you.

They are blanks in movies however yes bullets fired up can hit someone. However, they do not have near the velocity that you would think when falling down. They actual reach terminal velocity and tumble. They actually did a study on this on A&E on mythbusters. Quite interesting
