I'am not a big fan AT ALL of Sushi. I hate it. No matter how many different kinds of Sushi I try, It all taste like crap. Since I don't like Sushi, I do have every right to refuse to take a girl out for Sushi (I would still take her out to a nice place with good food; i.e. Italian, Mexican, Mediterranean, ect.) don't I? Especially since I'am the one who is paying for the dinner? After trying many different kinds, I refuse to eat anymore Sushi. People say that you "aquire a taste" for Sushi. Well that may be true but I guess if someone were to eat s*** (and get sick) enough times that they would eventually "aquire" a taste for s***. Anyway the point is, I refuse to take any girl out for Sushi, I don't care if it is the "trendy" thing to do or not. I don't follow stupid cultural fads or trends, and if I don't like something, I refuse to be a part of it, even if it means dumping my girlfriend (especially if she is a Sushi freak). As a guy, I think I have that right. What about you?

I'm with you- I hate sushi of any kind. I was in kind of an opposite situation- my boyfriend wanted to take me out to a nice sushi restaurant that he had saved his money for a long time to take me to, and I had to tell him that I'm really sorry, but I just don't care for sushi. He was a little upset, but then we went out for italian and had a great time. If your g/f can't put up with the fact that you have different food tastes, it's not a good relationship at all.... she wants to date herself. One thing that works is often, sushi places also have the teppanyaki tables (where they cook at your tables) or hot food available from the menu, so one of you can eat sushi, and the you can eat whatever you want.

Most sushi restaurants serve teriyaki as well... Couldn't you make the gal happy by taking her out to sushi then ordering whatever you want?

Seriously this shouldn't be an issue, read the menu. There are lots of people who don't like sushi. In fact I am willing to bet some are regular customers at their local sushi restaurant.

It is up to you to dump her if you want too. If you do not like sushi, you should not eat it. why does it always have to be a sushi date anyway. If you ask her out on a date to go out and eat, she needs to go where you want to go sometime also. If not, take someone else out that stays 500 miles away from a sushi place.

Well...here's my opinion. We all have stuff we can't stand. You don't like sushi, girl may hate something that you love. This is where compromise comes in. She would be an absolute moron to try and make you eat sushi when you have such a distaste for it. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't force her to eat something she hated. So, yeah you have that right, and if she can't understand that a human being actually doesn't like something, then she's an idiot.

I personally love sushi but i would never force a guy to take me to a sushi bar if he hated it. If your girl is worthwhile, she will understand and respect that. Just tell her how you feel about it and find a nice spot you both like.

good luck.

Of course. Why would you go somewhere where you can't eat the food? Also, I don't think sushi is something that grows on you, you either like it (I do!) or you don't.

Dumping someone over their food preferences seems a bit extreme.

Why would you go so far as to break up with your gf over it? It's not that big of a deal. Sushi is gross and what is the big deal? Don't eat it.

I can't believe your girlfriend thinks it's acceptable to force you to eat sushi, especially if it made you sick. If she wants to eat it, she can go with friends. There must be something you both like eating, surely?

Tell you are allergic to seafood or something.

Just tell her you can't handle Sushi. That it makes you sick and offer an alternative.

First, I don't think you can call Sushi "trendy" anymore. At least not outside of rural Arkansas. (PLEASE don't be offended if you're from rural Arkansas. It was meant as a joke). If you're paying, go where YOU want to go. Even if you weren't forking over the dough, you're still half of the decision-making team. If your opinion and your preferences don't count for anything in your relationship, you are DEFINITELY with the wrong lady.

Bon Appetit
