I believe it's our mortality that gives life meaning. Nothing in this universe last forever. From galaxies, stars, planets and life. We are all born, we live and we die. Unfortuntly we only life about 80 years compared to billions of years the stars live.
Why can't everyone see how rare and prescious our lives really are. It seems that most people in the world just say, "hey if I screw up here, I have an afterlife to get things right" That says that this life doesn't mean anything, even wondering what this life is and what it means.
We are the only ones who can give our lives meaning. Not just by our morality but with our love, music, beauty, art and litature, children and nature, and our planet and lives on this world can give life meaning. We are one planet.

Why would that mean "it was all for nothing" Doesn't your life mean anything to you now?

I believe in your sentiments, yes we should make this life count, however I also know that there is an afterlife. It has been proved to me on a number of occasions.
Don't presume that just because those that believe in an afterlife, that the hereafter is all they focus on so therefore "miss out" on this life. If anything it enriches our whole meaning of being alive.

Is there school life after elementary grades? after High School? After college? and after your working days are over? Is there a retirement or something.
I suppose you do not believe in your own soul and in your own intellect. I don't even think you believe in electricity or the air you breathe.
An automobile has been invented and manufactured for a purpose. It could be a computer, a house or anything you desire to do, as write a book or write a song or anything else.
Do not tell me that you came into this world, given life and the time to spend it for nothing. Do you think God is brainless and stupid for giving you life for no specific purpose at all? Tell you what you cannot even control your own heartbeat at your own will. Nor can you defy the law of gravity by levitating even for 15 seconds, nor could you bring back the time you spent. Excuse me but you are just another passenger on planet Earth, and you are trying to hi jack our minds into believing there is no God. He is the captain of the ship, and you cannot dictate to Him that he does not exist.
Well, if you have no parents there is no God. If you have no navel there is no God. If you popped out of a test tube or just popped out of the ground out of your own free will then there is no God. You can't even exceed your own physical limitations. Why? don't you go to sleep? Don't you breathe or go hungry or grow tired?
What do you do with thankless or ungrateful people or friends? You drop them, like a bad habit or a hot potato, right? Well, you better think harder, whoever you are, because this will happen to you when your life's journey is over and your time is up and your little game of denying the existence of God is over..There will be an accountability.
Even in our physical world, there is a saying '"Ignorance of the law is no excuse." You will not be excused, I guarantee you.

Amazingly well stated! My philosophy exactly...its this and this is all there is. We have to take care of this gift TODAY. Live carefully, live wonderfully, live respectfully but most of all just LIVE! Quite worrying about things that may never even happen.
WE ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN GIVE LIFE MEANING. I totally agree. If people realized this, and could see the beauty of it, there would be no more war.
I wrote a song a long, long time ago when I was a kid...
The Salmon are running; they jump up the creek.
They risk all life's perils for the love that they seek.
They sacrifice their life to give 20 more,
If people were like that there'd be no more war!
Your little "essay" helped me remember that one!

You are absolutely right however, if there is no after life, all meaning of life dies when we die, I believe. When our sun dies in the next 5 to 7 billion years our morality, love, music, etc. dies as well, we cannot assume that humans will find another suitable planet to live on, or that our species will even last another 100 years.

Well, really the whole 'living eternally" thing was made up by people who only lived to about 40, so you could imagine this would be such a great thing, since all they saw back then was death. What they failed to realise was that life gets boring and enough is enough after a while. People get so sick of it they kill themselves. the highest suicide rate is among those over 60. Living forever like a vampire isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Sure, some self absorbed people who have an incredible fear of death would like to think it's true, let them. We all end up in the same place anyway.--plant food.

Trust me! There is another life after we leave this world..God said so in John 3:16...
I believe we are here to experience all emotions and to learn from them.We are being tested to see if we are worthy of eternal life, as God has promised. This is only a temporary home for us.We will have eternal life when we pass. But only, if God feels we are worthy of it. And we make atonement for our sins..

Yes, there would be more meaning. In fact, there would be less meaning if the Christianity theory of life is true - you just live your life worshiping G*d, and is you worship him well, you get to be with him so you can worship him for the rest of eternity: if you don't worship him well, then you just get roasted in flames.

please ignore fireball2's answer. If this life is all we have, it makes living it for the benefit of life the important factor in deciding how to live your life instead of living your life so that you can have a personal relationship with god and get into heaven.

It's so sad that people need to seek meaning outside of themselves. I can only equate this to self loathing.
