My husband and I have had some good experiences with Junii Soloman of Diamond Club Tattoo Studio (Van Ness Ave, SF). She worked on a Japanese piece for my husband and we were both happy with the results. She was born, raised, and apprenticed in Japan, so she's well versed in Kanji and Japanese design and detail. Hopefully we'll get a chance to go back and see her again soon. But before you set down your money and flesh, check out her portfolio to make sure it's what you want/like.

Rob Struven from Garage Ink, he has a shop in Hayward and one in Napa. He books a couple of months out though. He's really good and is not just a tattooer, but also an artist and has sold many pricey paintings. There's so many out there though...... good luck... and do your research before you pick.
