I have an 02 passat that has a bad catalytic converter. what is the cheapest wasy to fix this and were cani get it done near tualatin, or?

A Catalytic convert costs between $190 and $250 if you buy and install it yourself. All about $150 if you have someone else do it.

the cat may still be under warranty. federal emission warranty is good for 8 years or 80000 miles. if your car is out of this warranty period a new cat from the dealer runs around $700 for the part and then most likely another 2-3 hours labor to install. with my personal experience i would not recommend getting an aftermarket cat.

It MAY be covered under Federal emission warranty. Check with a VW dealer. Doesn't matter where you bought the car. They all have to honor the warranty.
