The question is...... What is the differences in the Anti spyware tools?? Is one better than the other, does one detect stuff the others don't and vice versa?? I use Lava Soft and have used Spybot/search and destroy, and Windows defender 2.... But would just like to know do they all detect the same stuff or is the scanning engines totally different?..........

I use and recommend both Ad-Aware and Spybot. Ad-Aware is like a virus scanner, it looks at all memory objects, registry entries, and files, looking for patterns in it's database.

Spybot has a list (53,000 at last count) of specific threats, which it checks for.

Just like antivirus software, there is no single product that removes all threats. That is why a combination is more effective.
