You can get rid of your stuttering if you are better able to comprehend as to why exactly you stutter in the first place. Your problem could be due to the fact that you are unable to completely express yourself freely and you have trapped emotional, physical, spiritual, or mental energy. Bottled up energy is one possible reason... Another is deep rooted lack of self-confidence, which can damage your ego, and without a strong ego, you will not have confidence in even the simplest of tasks.
Obviously what a speech therapist is going to do for you is take you by your hand(figuratively speaking), and take you through a step-by-step program which may help you to gradually improve your speech, and eventually, eliminate the problem. This may work for you because it will gradually build your ego, and will re-install some much needed self-confidence in your speaking on a step by step, day to day basis.
Overwhelming fear could be another issue. Which, actually, may be rooted in your own lack of self-confidence. You may get a cold, extremely scared feeling when you begin speaking, that is just overwhelming and it freezes you.
My advice would be to find a way to strengthen your mind and your spirit. Find a way to restore high levels of self-esteem and self-confidence. You can do this by playing sports, joining a gym, or by joining a martial arts or yoga class. Watch out for the phony martial art schools. A good martial art teacher will not only teach you how to fight, but he will help you develop social skill as well. You can also do speech therapy if you have the funds, I would recommend it.
Just remember to use your ego, and dont let it use you.

As a child I was an emotional wreck. I use to stammer and stutter, the speak therapist would come to the class door and call out our last names to come with her. The kids in the class would make fun of us, and it really did hurt. I had twin sisters that were sixteen months older then me. I would try to say something before them, because I was jealous of them. My mother would tell them to stop and let me get out what I wanted to say. I had to slow down and think before I spoke so all of the words would come out. Even today sometimes I know what I want to say, but I can not pronoun the word. I have learned to substitute words so I will not be embarrassed. I think that stuttering has to do with nerves and fear. Do not give up, I saw a guy on television that started to sing when he got nervous, and this helped him with his speak. Speak therapist is the answer, good luck.

Check out the web site of The Stuttering Foundation of America. You will find a world of information on stuttering, a newsletter, referrals to specialists in your area, online videos, and can check to see if your library has any of their materials. If your public library isn't listed, let them know they can get free Stuttering Foundation materials for you and others to check out. Check out the section "brochures for all ages" as they can be downloaded and printed out to give to others like teachers and employers.

I too had problems as a child with is. as donnabelleck said the speach therapist changed her sons life and did mine too. One of the techniques give to me was to get a book go to my room and read aloud. It is a hard road but it was well worth it.
Good luck you will make it
