Sure can and often are used for freshwater fishing. Around my home state some guys use heavy saltwater gear for catching monster catfish.
For certain species and fishing techniques big heavy equipment would not be practical. A light bite from a crappie or bass would be next to impossible to detect on a rod built like a pool cue with 300 pound test line for instance.
Most modern day rod manufacturers and suppliers have species specific rods for individual techniques.

The answer is "YES" but it depends on the type of rod and the fish you are after. You do not want to use a 12ft surf rod for freshwater under normal circumstances. I use my rods for both salt and fresh water and have not found a difference in the action. If anything I want a stiffer rod for freshwater. I use medium action rods on everything 8ft and under and heavy for my longer rods.

Yes they can be. You just need to make sure that everytime you use the pole in salt water..You need to wash the hardware in clean fresh water.. the salt corodes the mechanicals of the reel.

The mustard color Tiger rod by Shakespeare is the best rod I have ever used for both. I have 12 of them and for the money, about 55 dollars, it is impossible to beat IMO. The mh is a very stiff rod and plenty big enough to handle fish up 90 pounds, my personal best catfish and a 130 tiger shark in Florida. I generally use my medium action rod and even some of the Tiger Lites.

Saltwater rods make great freshwater gear. Depending on the size of the saltwater rod, you can use it for:
Catfish
Muskie
Salmon
Pike
Even for pulling bass out of thick weeds.
An 8ft Saltwater pole with a small casting reel is a nice combo.

im fresh back from kodiak alaska and my answer is yes but if you use a fresh waterpole in saltwater you need to rinse it off each time you use it becuz the salt will eat up the line on your pole thats my advice!

Saltwater poles are usually longer and stiffer. So if throwing a small lure would'nt work well.but a big muskie bait would.
