There is a real person behind the modern day Santa Claus - that person is St. Nicholas (more info at http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=371)

I believe that he was a very good and holy person and a shining example of how we all should live - giving to those less fortunate than ourselves. If we all acted in this way don't you think the world would be a better place?

As for when you should stop believing? I guess that is a personal choice - I hope that I never do.

As soon as when you start learning that he is not real. The reality that he repesents is not his sleigh, reindeers, red clothes and sack of gifts and not even his ability to go down the chimneys but the reality to make the season as a way of showing love and sharing specially to the young and developing minds of children. To teach them the beauty of appreciating the presents whether it is big or small and the ability to learn the aspect of giving when it is their time to do so.
