Thing is, his last name is Navarro.Navarro is a Basque surname. So my friend is basing his "Spanish" heritage on a group of people who hate Spaniards! I told him this, but he seems oblivious to the Basques and still insists he's of Spanish blood. Who's right? Spaniards aren't the same as Basques, are they?

What is a wabby ? There is a group of Basque separatists, they are still Spainiards. I assume your friend is fron Bilbao, he is still a Spaniard NOT Mexican. To the person who likes to classify Latinos, I've met a couple of Spainiards with no class so that is a bad generalization.

Mexicans are also of Spanish blood mixed with Inca or Mayan. Many Spanish were very careful not to "mix". Or wouldn't admit it when they did. The early Spanish in New Mexico(New Spain) in the 15 & 1600s mixed with Native Indians. Hispanics whose heritage goes back to early Spanish settlement in the US differentiate from more recent Mexican immigrants that way. Also, the name has Spanish, Basque and Italian origins. I'm not sure it matters, why don't you call him Spanish, if that's what your friend prefers?

Navarro isn t a pure basque last name, Navarro means someone from Navarra (old kingdom between Spain and France), instead traditional basques last names are Zubizarreta, Odriozola, Iturrualde etc , those that are difficult to pronounce :D

Basques are one of many littles "nations" or kingdoms in Spain, some basques want the independence (ETA, and they are pro comununist by the way) others dont.

It s normal that he want to be called spaniard, would you like to be called enlgish in England? Spaniards are famous in latin-america due to their "arrogance" or proud.

Basque people did live in part of Spain. So your friend could be from Spain.

It probably offends him/her because not ALL spanish people are "mexicans". Some people do originally call people that to spanish poeple but it's not the way to call hispanics.

Because people from Spain have class. If you were to put things in order of class I hear it would go like this:
1.spanish
2.mexicans
3.puerto ricans
4.guatemalans-----you get the idea

It's simply his/her personal opinion!
