Differences are in reel mounting type and location, line guides are usually very different, and line weight capacity are way different. The sensitivity and weight are obviously different as well.

The basic difference between tthe two will be the compontents on a saltwater rod would be made of stainless or other non corrosive allow. I mainly use light tackle (8-12lb) and my rods are comparable to a freshwater bass type set-up. Dealing with saltwater I must rinse my gear and wipe with cleaning solution after every trip. Doing this will keep the salt from corroding the guides.

fresh water is usually lighter smaller uses smaller line salt water is meant to catch bigger fish and is a lot heavier and use heavier line and bigger reels
