Until WW II the US had a traditional distrust of a strong active military, and except in time of war kept only a small force. In earlier times it was possible to do so because the technology was simple and the training needed was not that great. And time-lines were quite leisurely by our standards. But every time we needed a strong military, we basically got our rear ends kicked. Despite the atom bomb, when we entered the jet age, things were just too complicated to use that system any more. Even now, much of our difficulty is that we tried to cash a "peace dividend" at the end of the Cold War and downsized our military below safe levels.

"We need a strong military to defend the sniviling losers that won't stand up for what is right because they are afraid they might actually have to put in a little effort and see things through instead of quitting when the going gets tough and then try to justify it by saying it was wrong in the first place."
Hey, that was one sentence! Damn I'm GOOD!

Have a weak or no military in todays world and be the next Kuwait of 1990. Get invaded by your neighbor not because you pissed them off, but just because they can.

Look at your own society. Have weak law enforcement, you now have a high crime rate. It all works the same. Have weak schools and look at the type of student you put out.

In the wild, weak animals die, strong survive.

It is all scientific.

Because if we did not have a strong military, we would not be able to show our military might to the rest of the world. Other countries would not see us, and they would begin to think that America can easily be pushed around and taken advantage of. Of course, without a strong military, we would be easily pushed around and taken advantage of.

Countries like Iran, Venezula and others would act upon that and we would have people invading this country.

We're in it now, and we don't really have a choice, for we've already gone too far to turn back.

But, our nation has been headed down the wrong path for generations, ignoring the counsel of George Washington to "avoid foreign entanglements."

The founding fathers of this nation didn't want a large professional military.

A full-time professional military is a burden on the taxpayers and a temptation for the politicians, who have to justify having it.

Thus, our full-time professional military must be put to good use, so we get involved in foreign intrigues which inevitably lead to war.

The ideal situation would be for the United States to be defended from within by a universal citizen militia, similar to Switzerland and Israel, with only a minimal cadre of professionals to conduct training, coordinate operations, and maintain equipment.

Also, a universal armed citizenry would keep this country free of despotic tyranny imposed by our own government, as we would have the practical means at hand for a bloody revolt.

But, in order to do this, we first have to cease being officially involved in the affairs of other nations.

Then, we have to restore the "CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES" as the supreme law of the land, and clean house completely.

We should influence other nations to embrace liberty by our setting a good example for them to emulate.

Nothing succeeds like success, and when they see the benefits of individual liberty, limited central government, and impeccable moral standards, then the people in other countries will be inspired to reform their own governments.

But, the harsh reality we now face is that we MUST fight, for we're in for the long haul.

I already served in a war where America lacked the will to win and turned its back on its allies, reneging on its promises.

I do not want to see that repeated.

Let's go all the way on this one.

For the same reason you lock your door, Security. A nation that cannot defend itself will not remain a sovereign nation for very long.

Peace through superior fire-power. When you're as big as we, most sane people want to leave you alone. Having a large, well equipped, technologically advanced military allows us to project and protect our interests on the far reaches of the globe.

The US needs a strong military because there are many in the world who want to destroy us. We must defend freedom from those who want to oppress.
