Well in my opinion, dont ask him, let it be natural, when the moment is right between you, kiss him and see how he responds. Make that first move if you are inthe right atmosphere, many relationships with adults are never formally asked to one another as in highschool or college. It simply happens starting with a kiss. so kiss him and see how he reacts, if it if good continue, if not then say sorry lost my mind for a moment wont happen again.

I once got a woman i really liked who said no to me several times by using one line. I dont like pick up lines, but i told her hey Jolene will you go out with me, she said no again, I said come on Jolene be original everyone else says no. she thought it was cute and we ended up dating about a year.

Always friends first. If you two are as close as you make it sound then eventually you will grow on each other and the relationship will evolve into more. You can't rush a good thing. And remember, saying something too soon could put a damper on the whole relationship. One day at a time...that's all you can do.
