what do want to use this for plinking around or home defense? do want a revolar or semi-auto? I would suggest H&K, Sig or a 1911. you can get a decent sig used for pretty cheap. my friend got his for about $300 in really good condition. do not buy glocks what ever you do, do not believe the hype. they are pieces of crap and i have shot them. for a caliber you should look into the 9mm, 40 s&w, or 45 acp. 9mm is the cheapest but doesn't have alot knocking down power. the 45 has alot stopping power but it has alot of kick. the 40 is in the middle of the 9 and the 45. it has a good stopping power without all the recoil. if you want a cheap pistol and dirt cheap ammo go with a .22. the .22 is always a fun gun. last thing don't listen to anti-gun remeber they don't know what they are talking about.

Well don't look for the cheapest gun you can find. Don't buy value guns or the Sigma. Most good handguns will run between $500-$600 and perhaps higher. You can find deals in classifieds. Try backpage. Many of the same model handgun have different versions that use different calibers. What caliber do you wan't? Do you want a compact model? How much are you willing to spend because you get what you pay for? You don't really need any sort of permit. I checked and you don't need a pistol purcahse permit. Usully thats the most common requirement in many states.

You should buy a revolver instead of a rapid repeat handgun if you are not an expert handling a handgun. Gun barrel should be at least 2 1/2 inches in length for a normal size person and 3 inches for a larger person to carry. Light weight Smith and Wesson/Airlite, and the Tarus Ultra Light are two good brands capable of firing 5 or 6 shots.

All depends on your plans for the weapon. If it's for protection then i'd think about a 357, a 45, or maybe a 9mm. Different prices depending on the quality or name you want. However, if your looking for something like target practice or shooting rats or small animals i'd go with a 22. Ammo is inexpensive and the gun itself is fairly priced.

that depends on several things, have you any experience with pistols, what are you going to use it for,how much do you want to spend,my very first pistol was ruger single six 22/22mag paid 250 for it in95,i use my encore for hunting that's a 22-250 Rem.but basically it up to you to decide, and what you can afford,my personal choice would be a colt model 1911 in 45 ,but that may be a bit pricey, good luck and safe shootin'

Go to the local shop where the cops go and purchase a used police turn-in. They haven't been used much and offer a good value for the money.

High Point is cheap and a good gun for home protection but too heavy for toting around. For a carry weapon I would look into one of the air weights Like Tarris.
