We are looking at the Aquios but find it a little more expensive than we would like to pay. Is there a off brand which is just as good? Which features should we be looking for?

Some cheaper brands like Olevia, Vizio or Westinghouse will do well for you. You should look for a tv that has a dual tuner, contrast ratio of 1000:1 or better, response time of 8ms or less.

Everybodys 'bang' is different - why would you choose an item based on someone elses interest ?
Go to a store that has a bunch all in a row and find which one plays good for YOU, not the guy on Yahoo.

I say samsung, becasue my bang is for gaming and samsung is the undisputed gaming tv. and is in my opinion the best lcd tv made.
