My great grandfather had to go on a business trip and was at a hotel where he stopped to stay on the way back home. The hotel was located in Chicago. He was in the hotel bar drinking and someone slipped sleeping pills into his drink and it killed him. They found him in his hotel room. His death certificate says that his wife's name was Eilen. And that's not his wife's name. Also the police never investigated the case. They marked as possibly homocide or suicide. My great grandmother had no idea at first that her husband was dead. She went to her local police station and told them he had not come home yet and showed the police his picture. They told her, "oh he's a good lookin man he'll turn up" This crime happened in 1969 and the hotel was destroyed a long time ago. But this Elien person might be alive still at the age of 80 and I believe she killed my great grandfather. He was only 33, his family needs to know the truth. Does anyone know how I could open it or is it possible to solve?

you need to take all the proof you have that he is your great grandfather, find a detective in chicago that was not around when this happened and plead with them until they will reopen this case, it is not too late. There is a file somewhere and although it would be hard, there are a lot of detectives who would love to solve a homicide this old. It is good for there name also, a private detective may take on this case cheaper than you think because if they solve it more people will want them. So, its good for there business, i dont mean to sound rude but, its the truth good luck to you

You can of course hire a private detective.

But esp if there is no real cause of death to even prove there was a murder, the police may have little desire to look into it.

And of course it does not have to be "opened" it is already open, just not active or being investigated.
You would have to put pressure on the department to look into it. Some large departments have a cold case group that looks into old cases, most departments dont and most barely havve time to look into current cases.

If you have political contracts you get political people to prssure the dept to look into it

In 37 years the details have been distorted. I am sure of that. Sleeping pills in his drink? why do you think that? "Eilen" may have been listed as his wife on court records. The law enforcement does not put "spouse" on a death certificate because a woman said it was so.

What you need to do is "light a fire" under some detective's butt in Chicago to see if they are willing to open this "cold case". You could also hire a private detective, but that would be costly. Since the case is 37 years old...it truly may be too late. Good luck.

Hire a P.I murder cases don't have a time clause. it's VERY VERY unlikley they will be able to prove it since so much time has passed by and all evidence is gone so if this Elien person can be found, the best chance is if she confesses. I truly and sorry to hear this and don't worry, God will be her judge.

By coming up with new and relevant evidence pertaining to the old case.
