my car broke down this evening, i thought it was the battery because it wont turn on and all it makes is a click sound, But the lights, the radio, and the power locks and windows work. Everything looks normal except i think the security light didnt used to flash before, and it does when i stick the key in and turn it. Mother says it could be the starter or maybe somebody tried to steal it, or even a bump from behind might have done it. i know my Old car had a killswitch that would prevent the car from starting if it got bumped, but i dont knwo if my New car has one. Its a Pontiac 2002 Grand Am SE. anybody have any ideas??

thanks for any suggestions

If the car is making a clicking noise when the key is turned, it is most likely a low battery or a bad battery terminal connection.

Even though the lights come on, the battery may not have enough power to start the car. Try jump starting the ca, or charging the battery. If the car will start with a jump, have the battery tested, and replaced if needed!

try jumping it first to make sure that your battery is ok. a weak battery will still light the lamps , but not have enough juice to turn over the engine. if the starter is clicking it probably doesnt have enough juice to turn the engine. start with the battery. doesnt sound like a saftey switch, as it is trying to start. if it was a safety thing it would not give the starter power at all.

2002 ?

could be battery especially if it is the original one.

check the area around battery post connections for any powdery stuff or loos bolts on the posts.

batteries have less power in cold weather, and engines want more juice to turn them over.

The low voltage may be t he reason the security light is on.but there is no kill sw on this car. Just fix that problem first and see what happens.
