Matthew 5:14- Jesus said to His disciples, "You are the light of the world". However, in John 9"5, Jesus declared, "I am the light of the world." Who is the light of the world, Jesus or His disciples?

Jesus is the light of the world and we as followers are to be like Him (a reflection of Him), therefore, we both are. Awesome, huh?

The BIble does say both of these things, However the answer is a simple one, The BIble says that Jesus is the truth and the light, and when we become christians by repenting and trusting the savior, the Light of the Gospel; then shines in our lives as a testimony. therefore, the light of Jesus is lit within us and we take the light into the world. If you have ever watched the olympics, the fire is carried from torch o torch unitl it finally arrives at the main torch. the light of the flame begins at the first torch, and the light is passed on. by the time the fire reaches the main torch, it is burning more imensly and stronger than ever. the same applies to the Gospel light, we pass on the light of the Gospel to others and when it is all said and done, the Gospel will be know too the world.

Neither, they just didn't know about the sun back then. It turns out, several centuries later, that the sun is the light of the world. Now don't limit yourself to just one book of history, if you only read one from 2000 years ago, and none of the ones that follow it, you will have a very unbalanced look at the world.

Interesting question.
Light in John 3:19 is capitalized, (meaning God or Jesus).
Light other places is small letter light.
The question requires some study.

John 3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

Often, men in placed by God postions of authority on Earth are referred to as (small letter gods), meaning they are representatives of (capital letter) God.
This may be something similar.

True believers in Christ reflect the light of Christ. Since he is not physically on this earth, he left us the task of being the light through which people can see him. We as Christians are to be reflectors of that light and to act as children of light and not as children of the darkness. I Thess. 5:5

He was telling His discples that they are going to be the light of the world, sort of a way of building up their self esteem for when He was crusified and they were left to continue the preaching. He was also explaining that the people of his church would be the light in a world of darkness, as He is. It is not a title that has to be attributed only to Him, not like "prince of peace" or other titles which belong only to Him.

Both. Now that Jesus is in heaven, it is his disciples' job here on earth to carry on his work (the spreading of the good news about him).

Jesus comes to live in us, and lives His life through us. Therefore He shines His light through us, and we become the light of the world through yielding to Him. It is no longer I who live but Christ Jesus in me. So He is the light of the world, I am just the vessel. But if you put a candle in a vessel it shines. So I too am the light, (By Him). Wheee!!! Galatians 2:20.
