I man who fears God will do whatever that God says as long as he is in fear. If one forgets things that scare him off (stories of hell for instance) then he will act by his nature. So if a person by nature is a good person, whatever his beliefs are, even if he doesn't believe in God himself will be nice to his wife. But if a person is not good by nature, and fear is the only drive, then his actions vary depending on his mood. Although it won't be conscious a lack of fear. Usually fear is because of hell. If a person thinks its a long time from now and he has to think about what is best for now, then he will act by his nature, good or bad.

If the person fears God, then his actions will depend on what he thinks God wants him to do. In this case the behavior varies from a man who thinks man is superior, to one who thinks he has to be fair and just, to being very caring and loving. Religion can sometimes make some people become better people too.

A husband who is actually acting as described in the Bible would be treating his wife very well. The trouble is too many men act like asses with huge egos.

Are you claiming that your wife is God?

I don't think it really has much to do with it. I've known many religious men who've mistreated their wives, and many non-religious men who treat their wives well.
