Yes. They will give you very quick lessons in Boot Camp. The first splashdown in boot will be from a platform about 30 feet above the deep-end of the pool. You'll be in full gear with a full seabag strapped around your shoulder. There will be two instructors on the platform with you screaming in both sides of your ears, "Jump, you worthless peice of @#$%!! You scumbag. You (fill in the blanks)!!!" Then, you will hit the water. You won't even hit the bottom so don't worry. Next you'll have to lose your seabag, pull off your pants in the water and make a floatation device out of them by tying the pants legs. If you don't know how to swim, you'd better learn at least how to tread water and float otherwise you'll have to do it again and again until you get it right.

The next day, I can guarantee you that you will be in the pool for a few hours of lessons.

I was on the battalion staff at a recruit training center for 2 years.

On the other hand, you may want to join the French Foreign Legion. They hangout in deserts where too much water isn't an issue.

You don't have to be able to swim to join the Navy, but you will have to swim in order to get through boot camp. The requirements are not that strict. They will try very hard to teach you. Teaching is what they do, day in and day out, they're very good at it. If you still can't swim after that, you'll just wash out of boot camp. No harm, no foul.

You must learn to swim to be in the navy and the Marine Corps. you don't have to be a good swimmer you just got to know the basics... if i threw you in a pool would you just sink to the bottom or would you fight your *** off to keep afloat and get to the side and get out... if you would just sink to the bottom then you should not join you should go to collage and become a local trash man. if your really willing to go threw the pain and frustration of boot camp you can take your self down to a local pool and get some swimming lessons to learn to swim... your not going for a gold meddle you just trying to learn how not to sink like a rock... the navy is awesome it will be a wonderful experience for you... learning to swim is not hard. i taught my 3 yr old to swim and i am sure you can do it.....

Anyone who tells you that you have to know how to swim or learn how to be in any military branch don't know what they are talking about. I know lots of people in all branches who can't swim. I had a Navy instructor when I was in the Air Force at my tech school who said they couldn't swim.
Just ask anyone in the Navy or a recruiter and they will tell you.

You have to swim and float in the Navy. If you go into a program like EOD, SEAL or Diver, you must swim way better than average. If you do not know how to swim, or don't do well, you would go to remedial swimming during basic training (special swim classes.) In remedial, you would get more specialized training in swimming.

You only have to be able to float, but being able to swim will give you better performance marks. There was a chief on one of my ships who got a really hard time because he couldn't swim a lick. Try to learn, it's fairly easy, and always comes in handy if your ship sinks.

No, Im in the army but I was going to join the usmc and i checked on it. There are many jobs in each branch that dont require swiming. If you pick a job that dose, im sure thay will teach you. My only real advice would be, get a prior service friend look over your contract BEFOR YOU SIGN ANYTHING!!! uncle sam wants you, but on his term, not yours.

You will have to go through drown proofing. That means that you will have to jump in a pool and learn to tread water, work with other recruits in a semi chaotic situation and then learn how to (while treading water) use your utilities to make a life preserver to help keep you afloat.

It's not hard, but it can be terrifying for someone with a deep fear of water.

Learn to compartmentalize your fear, and trust your your instructors.
