This is not true. It would be impossible to close down that many freeways in LA with that many people. It just doesn't happen except in the case of a National Emergency. I would try to avoid the freeways in any way I could thouhg, they are HORRENDOUS to drive on. There is bumper to bumper inch along traffic at all times of day. Rush hour traffic is 7am-8pm.

You didn't mentioned where I-5 is going to be closed. (It's over 1000 miles long), or where you heard it. Even over the Grapevine, it's highly improbable that the entire freeway will be closed. Since this is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, Caltrans will do everything in their power to keep the roads open. Of course there are some closures LATE at night (11PM to 6AM), especially to trasitions, which you can see at http://www2.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/.

The only thing I found was I-5 North around Castaic(Grapevine area) was reduced to 3 lanes because of a mudslide. But not the entire freeway.

NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC IS REDUCED TO 3 LANES 5.2 MI NORTH OF CASTAIC
/AT TEMPLIN HWY/ (LOS ANGELES CO) 24 HRS A DAY - DUE TO MUD SLIDE REPAIRS -
MOTORISTS SHOULD EXPECT DELAYS OVER THE CHIRSTMAS WEEKEND, PLAN ACCORDINGLY

Call Caltrans. Or go to Yahoo home page put in your zip and traffic for your area. It will show you freeway closures.
