I had a female budgie and a male budgie together for about 4 years. They won't mate! Is something wrong or were they meant to be like that?

Budgies live in cages with really flimsy bars, so if you're sure one of your birds doesn't have some nare pigment fluke, you may have perches that are wobbling. Birds that have wobbly perches can't often manage the cloacal kiss by which sperm is transported from body-to-body, since the only parrot that has actual visual external sex organ differences is the vasa parrot -- in other words: your Ma and Pop budgie each have no penis; just a set of "mouths".

Fish and snakes are other examples of animals with this evolutionarily old mating-orifice (the cloaca), which has otherwise since faded out of the population in favor of .

I do not mean to make you sound like a retard but are you for sure they are male and female sometimes a female can have a bluish tinted cere or other way around if you really want them to mate you may want to get them tested by their dna to see if they are indeed male and female. i had budgies......started with just a female and then i ended up buying 3 other budgies ended up being two males and two females and with my one female had three different (litters if you will) and the other female i had never had any babies.....having a few budgies can help in the whole mating expeirence maybe adding one more male or one more female could invoke the mating process....anyway my buddy had a male and female and they laid eggs once and never hatched and he had them together for like 2 yrs after that and no eggs...so it just depends on the birds.....by the way i never changed their diet but have read that it can help a ton

Put a nest box in. Make sure it's one especially for budgies. Put in 2 or 3 for best results.

Change their food. Some of the prepared foods don't have proper nutrition (like eating nothing but fast food, you get full, but it's not good for you). If they don't get proper nutrition, they won't be stimulated to mate. Go to a specialty bird store, or vet and ask what they recommend. Offer fresh fruit and vegetables, they might not eat them, but it's worth a try.

Also, light, heat and humidity have something to do with it. They mate seasonally, usually in spring, so you may have to wait.

Seperate them. 4 to 6 weeks apart may put the spark back into their relationship. Especially if you keep them apart until spring.

Make sure they are male and female. It can be tricky. Consider DNA sexing. Look here: http://www.vetdnacenter.com/ They do it cheap and by mail.

Good luck

I learned that even if you have a male and a female they wont always mate. I have 2 parakeets, and they wont mate either. Ask bird breeders if their parents have breeding backrouds before buying. Some birds cant mate. You probably get tired of hearing this but you should talk to the pet shop owner or a vet.

Pretty much how other animals mate. Only the male fertilizes the female and then the female will produce an individual egg at a time, until she has what is know as a "clutch". I would search "bird breeding" and you should find some interesting articles.

For some reason budgies are much less likely to breed if there are just 2. They need to be around other pairs of birds. Most breeders keep several pairs at least.

I've found that even animals need chemistry. If they are not compatible, then they won't breed. You can try adding a nesting box. Sometimes there are hormonal problems. Good luck and give them a boosted diet for breeding birds. Wouldn't hurt.

they should mate anytime, but when they are ready to.mine havent mated yet neither.and i had them since last christmas.i got them for christmas last year.but they still are friends though, but still havent mated.i think budgies take longer than cockatiels.i have three cockatiels two girls, and one boy.and the male has mated with both of them.and i havent had them a year yet.so just give your budgies time,i know that they will mate for sure when they are ready!!!!
