when i put the disk in to try to install the camera it said that i needed windows 2000 service pack 4 or higher or windows xp. i have windows 2000 service pack 3 ---it gave a link to microsoft and said to check for updates. so my question is , if i updated my computer from microsoft then will it change it from a service pack 3 to a 4 or higher? or am i going to have to update my windows

You shouldn't even still using Win 2000 in this day and age 8-))). All you need to do is run the microsoft updates on your pc and it will update your pc from sp3 to sp4. Here's is the direct link if you want to download it yourself and install it : http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/sp4Eng.mspx
Choose the express installation and when the popup window come up, just select Run instead of Save to do an online installation. Select Save if you want to download it and install at a later time.

Yes, if you update the system from Microsoft you should end up with service pack 4....This is a Windows update and for your systems security you should always update when Mircosoft tells you to do it.

You have no choice. Go to windows update and update it. It will not hurt your computer.
