Have icecream, popsicles, all things cold ready. That feels good and helps the swelling. Sleep with your head elevated and take whatever pain meds they tell you to...before you hurt too bad.

Great suggestions from everyone - anything cold/frozen is going to alleviate your pain and also will help control post-surgical bleeding, so load up on the popsicles. I would go for sherbet instead of ice cream because the cream of ice cream can kind of clog up your throat causing you more irritation. For the reason above, you actually should stay away from aspirin for pain control -- aspirin will contribute to more bleeding. If you choose to stick with over the counter pain control, I would suggest Tylenol, particularly Tylenol with codeine syrup since it will be easier to swallow. Ibuprofen can also cause some bleeding, but more in your stomach than anywhere else. If you opt for a prescription painkiller, get something mixed with Tylenol (for the anti-fever and anti-inflammatory properties) such as Vicodin or Percocet. If you are allergic to Tylenol, your doc can give you something else like Vicuprofen (same prescription painkiller mixed with Ibuprofen instead of Tylenol) .. Good luck

i had tonsillectomy years ago. It is done when you they often swell and get infected. If the occurrence is usually 3 to 5 times a year, the doctor would usually advise that you have them removed. The reason is that the bacteria can reach other parts of the body even the heart and that would be dangerous. In that case, your tonsils become the home of the bacteria. So instead of protecting you from bacteria, it further exposes you to them. the doctor will then advise a tonsillectomy.
as for the pain management after the tonsillectomy, ask your friends and relatives who will visit you in the hospital to bring plenty of ICE CREAM! that the only thing that you can eat after the operation. Don't worry bout the calories, i lost a lot of weight after my tonsillectomy. you can take anything COLD. Good luck!

Know the asteroid wellhead tonsil stones them for many years and it's been title not eventually.
Best decision I've ever made! I was shocked by the way of getting out the stones out. It was so easy, but more importantly, painless. I really liked the little trick he had for preventing gag reflex. He have one happy customer here.

During your recovery read alot.
An excellent book to read is
"Coming to Our Senses"
BY: Jon Kabat-Zinn.
It gives some excellent advice on helping ourselves during recovery, using our recovery time to our advantage.
And another excellent book to read is
"Working with Anger"
BY: Thubten Chodron.
Everyone is challenged with anger, at one time or another in their life. And you, as I was, will probably experience some irritability and some possible frustration and anger during your recovery. This helpful book gives many very sound alternatives and advice to overcoming anger and irritability, and cultivating Patience !!
Also, keep plenty of ice cream, yogurt, and
popsicles on hand. They'll help your throat.
And stay away from caffeine, in sodas and coffee. It will irritate your throat.
From an R.N - with a Master's Degree,
who had his tonsils taken out a few yrs. ago.
And YES, take your pain medication, whenever you feel you need it. That is
what your doctor prescribes it for.
Happy Holidays to You.
You asked an excellent question !!

Eat lots of Popsicles. Although you want to stay away from the red ones, and anything else that is red, if you happen to start bleeding, you will not be able to tell. Drink nice cold stuff and take it easy, do not lift heavy stuff as this will result in pressure around your stitches.

The hardest part is the first couple of days....Eat lots of icecream and milkshakes and don't eat anything HOT for at least a week...Trust me lol I know from experience. Try not to talk because it really does hurt and take as many medications as you can!
