I followed a recipe on the dot on recipezaar.com. According to the other reviewers, the dish was very flavorful, etc. When I made it had no taste and double checked the list of ingredents. So I thought a bit and was wondering can it be the spoon I used to measure the amount of each spice. I use a chinese spoon that is fairly small, so I *think* that could be the problem.

How big is the spoon you use to measure out the ingredents? Is there supposed to be a measuring standard for these things, like a special spoon that I should be using when making these measurements?

If you are going by a recipe, you should use a set of measuring spoons. Measuring spoons come in "T" for tablespoon a fairly large size like a soup spoon size and "t" for teaspoon which is smaller, about the size of a regular spoon. But serving spoons, or eating spoons won't give you the right measurement for the right flavor amount.

I totally agree with you. This is one measurement in a recipe that is left open - to what...... our imagination?
Over the years, the way I've calculated one spoon is based on the ingredient if it called for chocolate sprinkles - well, I love chocolate sprinkles so I used my large spoon; a spoon of nutmeg got the littlest spoon; garlic got the medium spoon.

Yes, you need a measuring spoon. Go to the dollar store even and buy a set of plastic ones. It makes all the difference, especially if you bake cakes or cookies!

Have fun!

Ps. remember some peoples tasty is someone else's yucky. Substitute what you like for one of the ingredients.
