have a 55 ford with 272 engine. Owner manual indicates 30 weight oil. Can I use 10w30 instead or will I damage engine?

I don't see any problems using it in the winter. The old Y blocks tolerances would likely yield low oil pressure during the summer though. I use 30Wt in the winter and 40Wt in the summer in my old FE.

well you just need to know how the oil works.30 vs 10w30.
the number is the viscosity rating of the oil,30w is its ability to stay thick while hot.and the 10w30 has two options.it acts like a 10 weight for winter allowing better lubrication in winter,or cold temps.and still has the 30 weight for the summer driving, which is a multigrade oil really.a new tecnology, for a old car.this will cause you no grief, only lube the engine better during those winter warmups in storage.and most 30 weight oils now are just for mowers and such, due to the fact that they are mostly non detergents.ihope this helps you.check out my site for more info.

No it will not The # 10 is a light weight iol and flows well with starting it as it gets the oil up in the engine fasterGood for cooler weather starts. The 30 wt is for highway /hotter weather running. Use a High detergent oil and experiment between 5w 30 and 10w 30 and even 10w40. Figure out which one uses less oil in hotter weather (higher grades) and which makes the engine spin faster in cold weather lower grades ) Multi viscosity oils are better to prevent engine wear on start ups. Never use 20w50 oils as they are too thick (unless ya live in Death Valley)and don't flow up through the heads as quick as the lower viscosity oils. Too low a viscosity will only result in oil consumption(no big deal) too high a vicosity will result in a knocking noise that means engine wear(not good)

The easiest answer is YES.
If you have climate complications, i.e. summer temperatures higher than 40 degree Celsius, or winter temperature lower than -10 degree celcius for prolonged periods of time, then you will have to consider other options.
30 and 10w30 oil are basically the same as long as temperature is between 0 and 40 degrees celcius.
Good Luck

Use the Motorcraft 15W-40. Its says on the bottle diesel oil, but its the best for Ford gasoline engines

back in 55 they didnt have 10w30 or 5w30 choices. Use 10w30 in summer climates and 5w30 in colder climates if its a showcar that is judged at shows use 30weight oil.

My high mileage chevy was factory 10W30, but because of age and miles i use 20W50 year round, it gets the most viscosity rating for the conditions i operate in, and i think it has one of the wider viscosity ranges of non-synthetic oils. It may cover your needs year round as well.

Hope that helps

using a heavier oil won,t help a bit because once the oil get hot it still will leak ! they do sell stuff to swell up seals but i don,t know if it works or not ! your best bet is get the seal or seals changed ! if your desperate then try this ! change your oil and get a can of that stuff i said to swell the seals ! i saw some of that stuff in auto zone !

If the motor is tight and has no leaks, I would use Amsoil 5w-30 in it. You could use any brand, but I like this stuff better than anything on the market, and you only have to change it once a year.
