An escalator is a mechanically moving set of stair which goes up and down. Coming down, it is still an escalator, because it is named for the whole instrument.

"Escalator" was the trade name originally. It's a combination of "elevator" and "scala" (latin for steps). It was brought into common usage in the 50's because it's useage was not policed or enforced. (Like how in the U.K most people call a vacuum cleaner a "hoover" however that's a brand name or even "heroin" that's a copyrighted trade name too")
Other names included "Motorstair", "Electric Stairway" and "Motor Stairs".
They would have been much more sensible names so good point. ;)

descenator, or descanator.
To escalate, is to climb, essentially, so to climb down, is to descend.
Therefore, a descent'an'at'or....for descending?
This is made up, but so is escalator, both are based in latin, for climb, and climb down.
