Home school! I changed to that because the Teachers these days have no drive to do a good job, just get a check! Alot of the policies they have lead to why the system fails. Too much to get into here but...they spend more time on "statistics" and "categorising" groups....There is over population and they NEED more schools for instance...How can you cram 30 kids in one room for less than an hour when you have kids that learn from different ways and styles. Not many teachers care because they have all those "policies" to follow! Makes more time spent on paperwork then actually teaching. Not every parent can teach their own child so that is not the complete answer.....But more schools is a start. But it took years to get bad and it is only getting worse before it gets better. My son for instance learns by actually doing it (he also has disability's)not just hearing it he went from low performance in school to high performance at home and his self esteem sky rocketed! Smaller settings and longer classes....one week is science and the next is social studies the etc....keeps it in his head with a bang instead of little pieces here and there.....I do NOT like the school system the way it is now and when my daughter gets old enough to be in school I am not even going to try her there..

The quality of the school system depends on where they are at. The districts in good neighborhoods will attract the best teacher and those in the worst neighborhoods will attract the worst. How can you expect the poor teachers to produce the best students. The excellent teachers are not going to go for the bad neighborhoods just for a challenge. There work is easier in a good school and will work there if possible. The answer will not be found in our life times. Never beleive european teachers are paid more than in US They are socialistic which keeps wages down

First of all, there is no "the" US school system - school districts are quasi-independent and report to the individual state boards of education.

Therefore, tackling every single school board in the entire United States would be a mammoth job - and not all of them are weak.

So start with your local school board. Be an involved parent and/or member of the community. Ask to see the cirriculum. Attend school board meetings. Make your voice heard.

You could also mentor young people - volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters or your local Scouting organization.

I think the attitude of Americans towards education is what needs to change. Most students only show up at school because they are forced to attend. (compulsive education) Most teachers are disheartened after a couple of years of teaching because students are disrespectful, some parents are difficult, and administrators give no support. Not to mention, teachers are paid less in the US than most
European countries and work longer hours. I feel that if the population at large would be more appreciative of teachers and come to the understanding that an education is the key to success, our nation's education system would improve. Also, I believe that our national budget should increase funding for education.

Because it's essentially turned into a government program that's lost it's focus, which is to educate young people. We need to do away with public schools as soon as possible and get every student in a private school of some form. It wouldn't be expensive if all kids went to them, the competition would keep the price down.

Public schools have little ability to enforce discipline, and they have teachers who are qualified on paper but not qualified in terms of their personal skills.
